The impact on nursing of the 2010 IOM report on the Future of Nursing

Nursing profession is the largest division of the healthcare employees. Nurses play an important role when it comes to patient care. There are many obstacles that prevent nurses from being able to respond effectively to constantly changing healthcare system and to make changes and advance health, these obstacles need to be overcome. Along with Licensed Practical Nursing and registered nursing, there are other advanced nursing degrees like CRNP, CRNA, DNP, etc. Doctor of Nursing (DNP) degree provide care and leadership in the areas of the primary care and prevention (nursingworld.org). According to nursingworld.org, there are more than 35.2 million people do not currently receive adequate primary care services. Nurses with DNP level of education can have their own primary care practice which can help with the shortage of primary care …show more content…
The IOM report recommends to provide opportunities for nurses to assume leadership roles and serve as full partners in health care. According to (ffne.org), nursing leaders must act as full partners with physicians and must be accountable for their own contributions to delivering high quality care while working collaboratively with leaders from other health professions. To become a nurse leader, one has to get higher level of education that is master's or doctoral and should have great leadership skills. In order to ensure that nurses are ready to assume leadership roles, nursing education programs need to embed leadership related competencies throughout and should have leadership development and mentoring program available (nacns.org). In conclusion, the IOM along with Robert Wood Johnson Foundation proposed IOM report which includes making suggestions that outlines the future of nursing. The IOM report impacts on nursing education by improving the nursing education, nursing practice by ensuring that nurses can practice to the full extent of their education and nurse's role as a leader by providing opportunities for nurses to assume leadership positions and serve as partners in health care

    To this day there are three types of programs that exist to allow an individual to practice as an RN: the diploma, the Associate degree, and the Baccalaureate degree. The diploma route is a hospital based program that prepares an individual to sit for the NCLEX-RN. It is usually a two to three year program. It prepares the student for nursing jobs for delivering direct patient care in the hospital or other inpatient setting. They have written a report called “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” that outlines the impact of these changes on education, nursing practice, and nurses as leaders and made recommendations on the necessary changes.
