ILS Class Reflection
By participating 12 weeks in ILS course, I think I learned what the Liberal Arts Education is and how I use Liberal Arts Education in my life. When I first came to ILS class, I actually does not have any desire to do any work in the class but just get a credit. I hope it would be a easy class that gives a credit just for attending. Therefore, I was annoyed by essay assignments and reading assignments at first. Additionally, since I was first time in United States, I was having negative stereotypes about White people. I thought White people considered themselves as better people than Asians, and I thought I would experience many racism because I actually experienced racism in the my first day of United States in Chicago. However, ILS class was the exact opposite of what I thought. Every one in our class were kind to me and they talked and treated me without any difference as they do to their white friends. It was so sensational experiment for me, and this incident give courage to go through my first semester of college with confidence. Especially, I enjoyed two activities in …show more content…
The video criticize the same every day life and annoyance happening in daily life, but at the same time providing a solution of that and suggesting attitude towards it. I think the video emphasize the term ‘awareness,’ and awareness fulfill my understanding of Liberal Arts Education. I did put into action about what I learn about Liberal Arts Education, but I did not put much devotion in that action. I just did because it seems benefit to me, and I thought I will receive benefit just by doing it. After I found I need to put more effort on my actions, I started to think why I am doing it and how can I make it better in my daily actions. This makes me to consider my life more valuable, making my life more

David Foster Wallace's speech is to show the value in liberal arts college. In the passage David Foster Wallace writes, "I have come gradually to understand that the liberal-arts cliche about "teaching you how to think" is actually shorthand for a much deeper, more serious idea "Learning how to think" really means learning how to exercise some control over how and what you think. It means being conscious and aware enough to choose what you pay attention to and to choose how you construct meaning from experience." This course has given me a more humanistic view of fellow human beings. This is not to say that I did not before have compassion for other human’s beings; rather to say that my understanding of people and what they may be experiencing within their lives has changed some. We judge people everyday based on things such as appearance, speech and the like. If we look at things with a bit more empathy we can truly say that we can or have walked a mile in someone else's shoes. Many times sympathy takes control when really empathy should take hold. Personally, I implement new learning's into my everyday life. I learned to not be so quick to make a hasty decision and that actually hearing someone is different from just listening to them. Carl Rogers said this and I believe it has deep bearings within this course; "An assumption unusual in psychology today is that the subjective human being has an important value which is…

Jeremiah Conway writes The liberal Arts and Contemporary Culture and is bothered about how liberal arts is being taken for granted. He feels that this is a problem and it needs to be addressed. He makes it known that children will lack becoming educated in the future because science and technology is hindering there learning. If this problem is not approached then liberal arts would be ignored. They will be at risk of living in this world without any regards of life. Conway used an example of a “fish” not knowing what water was. This informs readers that people take education and life for graduated (2010, 4). What children do not understand is that they have the opportunity to gain knowledge but cannot due to technology and money. It becomes hard for them understand that being educated in liberal arts is better than having a one-track mind. If they want to become a scientist they will only learn the scientific method and equations. Moreover, they may not know basic home economic skill because they do not have an understanding of other disciplines.…

The entire video hits on the privatization of universities and how they are becoming mcdonaldized to the point that they are pushing students through just for the dollar signs instead of the reason for higher education. The video is a direct conflict between these pop up universities and schools that have rich history such as “ivy league” or traditional universities. Most of these newer universities are a convenience in that they are mainly on line instead of the traditional class room setting and these for profit universities are accelerated instead of taking the full time to earn a degree and actually retaining the information.…

When I first started this class I was very anxious about what to expect. I was hesitant and unsure if I am going to make it through, I doubted myself, every week I wanted to give up, mainly due to the fact as English is not my first language. As the class progressed, I felt more and more confident because of the different resources offered by the professor. Those resources were a very good aid in my writing. For example, in my first essay, the article written from the perspective of Donald Trump’s hair, played an important role in my decision of choosing a topic.…

The film Higher Learning is a call to action. It is a film that shows people as products of their environment. The film is set on a college campus, a place where most people learn about what they will do in their adult life to try to better the world or simply educate themselves in order to live a better life. However, life on the Columbus campus is not good; it is a battlefield between the races and sexes. I feel it is a bit exaggerated, but it allows people to see some of the issues that go on, on a college campus. The film focuses on three freshman (Malik, Kristen, & Remy) entering college. They enter a less than ideal new world that is filled with tension, anxiety and fear. Although the writer uses stereotypical characters, it is important to point out that although the character might be fictional; students like the ones portrayed in the film actually exist.…

The topic of race in my community never crossed my mind until I took this course and has finally open my eyes to the existing issues that people of all races and ethnic back grounds face on a daily basis. I am somewhat embarrassed about the actual lack of knowledge that I have about my community and the people who reside here. As I did different research assignments and projects, through this course, my eyes were drawn wide open of how much racism and prejudice is actually hidden from everyone’s everyday life until you see it on the news, hear it on the radio, or read about it in the newspaper. It saddens me…

I have found this class regarding Dynamics Of Racism And Oppression extremely interesting as well as enlightening. The past few years it seems as if many including myself have assumed that racism is an issue of the past. This class has made me realize how many issues continue to transpire for people of color on a daily basis. It has also been interesting to see how many people of color continue to feel extremely affected by the effects of racism, which proves a lot of work within the country needs to still be done towards this issue. I feel as if by 4 weeks into the class my everyday perspective regarding racism and oppression issues have already altered. If anything I have become more aware to situations surrounding me and try to be conscious of things that may be going on.…

When I first became an RA, I expected that I would be able to influence the lives of my residents, but I did not anticipate just how much the position would influence me personally. As a first year RA, I was passionate and dedicated to the RA role, but was also very nervous about making a mistake along the way. My lack of confidence was apparent in how my voice shook when confronting an incident, or when I would recruit another staff member to work with me on an LDO, rather than taking the initiative to host a program myself. At the start of this semester, I told myself I wanted to be different. I realized that in order to be the best version of myself for my residents, supervisors, and staff members, I needed to step up and develop the confidence…

On this movie, this is the story of a kid suffering from dyslexia and how with the help of an understanding teacher he overcomes it against all odds. Ishaan is a playful nine year old boy. He always gets low grades. He always gets into trouble. It seems like he enjoys defying orders that his parents feel anxious about him. I see the real worth of a child that has been discriminated by his neighbor, classmates and even his father because of his laziness in studying, but they do not see the real condition of the boy. The true worth of this thought-provoking film is in its educational value. The film educates the audience about dyslexia and promotes the idea that every child should be treated with love and respect despite his or her faults. A deeper look at the film brings out a bigger picture. That a child may provide his own idea if he will be recognize by others and see that he really need to have and attention of those people that is close to him. Especially his parents who want their child to learn to be a competitive one.…
