Today is a particularly exciting time to be studying religion because it is so complex. Religion I believe is very important in today’s world. Being able to know many things about religion is good just because you have to understand why people are doing what they are doing. It is also important because religion is everywhere we look today and being able to understand it will help. Throughout my whole life I personally didn’t have a really good understanding of what I really believed. Everyone has many different beliefs and different cultural rituals. But just because you don’t know so much about that specific belief doesn’t mean you can’t understand the way many people do things based on the way they were raised. We as people don’t have to agree with what other people do but I do believe that everyone should be able to understand how people live their lives.
There are many people who practice and celebrate their own beliefs everyday, just like Larry Torres’. In the Book I Was And I Am Dust, David M. Mellott the author shares his experiences of the Penitentes as an outsider. He explains their struggles with the institutional church and some of the extreme rituals they facilitate during holy week. David tries to help his readers understand the experiences of those within the group whose
I believe that everyone has his or her own way of thinking. I believe everyone is different in his or her own way. When Larry said that he remembered a priest asking him if he believed in god and he said that he believed that there is a god for those who need a god. This stood out to me because I Think of it in those terms as well. I do believe there is a god. But everyone, I think has their own way of viewing the god they want to believe
