I Pursue My AP Computer Science Class
For as long as I can remember, I was interested in math and science. Math comes naturally to me—I enjoy the consistency that goes with it and completing each challenging problem. Similarly, I can never get enough of science, especially marine biology. Of all my subjects, science is the one I pursue most frequently outside of school; however, I always wanted something more. I was introduced to programming in my AP computer science class, and from the first day, I knew it was for me. Computer science is an excellent amalgamation of the math and science I love, embedded with the perfect amount of logic. I have enjoyed every second of my computer science class and, no matter what, hope to continue the field in the future. Before this year, I was

Computer science has always been the one thing I knew that I would be getting myself into and anyone else around me would agree. As a child, I became obsessed with everything about it. I can still vividly recall the eleven-year-old me fawning over the likes of Lawrence Krauss and Neil Degrasse Tyson. I was completely immersed in everything and anything pertaining to the vast universe beyond our seemingly insignificant world. I thought I had it all figured out. I would devote my life to being an astrophysicist and eventually earn my PhD. I would relish in the pink lettering on my wall that said “Dr. Mia”, but as I approach my late teens, my mind has been bombarded with what-ifs and buts. Irrespective of my change of heart, I still have an intense passion for math and science since it is how we explain the world around us, and that is why I have settled on biomedical engineering.…

I was introduced to the field I am interested in from my 9th grade biology class. Prior to the course, I had never taken biology or any science, for that matter, that had captured my attention such as this year-long experience. I was intrigued by the subject and fascinated with all the advances in society that have been made by scientists throughout the years. The possibility of being able to do this in the future kept me engaged and I further pursued this interest by currently taking AP Biology. In addition, I was inspired by the change that scientists can make through research and…

Over the years I have discovered many things, alone, about myself, that would benefit me in the long run. As a child, math and science didn’t interest me, but I always knew what profession I wanted to take up, while in college. It was not until my high school years that I begun to realize the chosen field I wanted to major in medicine. I was surprised on how much I had evolved on the idea of math and science. Still, I was very much unaware of my next step with fulfilling my dream in college. However through research and determination I would soon be able to work towards my goals.…

Outside of the classroom, I am part of a few computer science clubs, an entrepreneurship club, and part of KU’s TEDx team. I also am currently working on an independent study under Dr. Dongkyu Choi in the field of Artificial…

The two courses I have chosen are: Occupational Therapy and Computational Mathematics. I have chosen Occupational Therapy as will give the opportunity to learn within a small cohort which means there will be more support from my professors. It will also help me gain skills in problem solving and analysis, help me develop skills in teamwork and help me recognize the expanding types of work for occupational therapists. Also, I am interested in Occupational Therapy simply because I would love to make a profound difference in the lives of others if I pursue a career as an occupational therapist. Occupational therapy has a wide variety of options available. For example, I can choose to work in a variety of practice areas, work settings, and with people of all ages. I have chosen Computational Mathematics as one of my top two choices because I love maths. It has always been my favourite subject since I was a child. I think I will develop my passion for maths further by experimenting with computers. Also, I think Computational Mathematics will facilitate development of my skills through teamwork and individual projects.…

“Are you ready for a unique learning experience that will help you succeed in college? Through AP’s college-level course and exams, you can earn college credit and advanced placement, stand out in the admission process, and learn from some of the most skilled, dedicated, and inspiring teachers in the world.” This excerpt comes from the main web page about AP course on College Board’s official website. In 1900, the College Board was created to expand the availability to getting a higher education. Formed by a handful of colleges, their purpose was to simplify the application process for students and college admission offices. More than a century after evaluating those first test-takers, their job has been helping more than seven million students prepare for a successful transition into college each year, and continue to serve the education community through research on behalf of students, schools and teachers. Over the last several years it has become crucial for high school students to take AP or Advanced Placement courses in order to get into a good college, or at least that is what they tell teenagers. As a former high school student, I was constantly told by the college admissions committees how it would make a difference to see that I took AP courses on my college application and got good scores on the AP test, but was it really worth the time and effort that I put into those classes? Because of the stress over the work and the obsession getting accepted into a good, AP classes are doing more harm than good.…

As a child I was always warned to not slack up, to instead pick up the pace and keep fighting for more. I translated this to my education; whenever the opportunity to take advanced courses like Honors, and AP came i fought to have a place in those courses. My entire experience in middle School and High School was (and is) a constant struggle to stay on top, on top of my responsibilities, obligations, and struggles. As a student I am proud to have made the decision of becoming an AP student, since it will better prepare me to merge into the flow and atmosphere of Universities. The life of an AP student is quite stressful and always occupied, with new assignments being piled up both in class and out. It is and was a constant struggle to complete…

I have been interested in science and math since I was reading books with science experiments in second grade. Applying math and science skills to solve everyday problems has intrigued me from an early age. I am always curious about how things work. Since taking AP Physics this year, I have been able to appreciate how math and science work together. I have taken other rigorous courses, but often it felt like learning math was isolated from other coursework. Math challenges me to problem solve and think at a higher level. I also love science, but until I took AP Physics my science classes were too easy. The labs in freshmen and sophomore science were enjoyable, but I never got a sense of how they connected to other concepts in Biology and Chemistry.…

When asked in class every year which subject I admired the most, my answer was always “none”. Although the grades in my core curriculum classes were always excellent, I never found interest in the basic subjects. Math was a bunch of numbers with letters, science just reviewed our bodies and the how the world was believed to be through one scientist theories and history repeated itself, constantly. As a freshman, I contemplated tremendously over what major and career I would pursue for the rest of my life. I never knew there were more subjects than just science, English, math and history until the day my mother introduced me to unraveling my creativity in the summer.…
