I Just Wanna Be Average Essay
“I Just Wanna Be Average” by Mike Rose is an excerpt from his book Lives on the Boundary about his time in Our Lady Mercy High School’s education system. He went into Vocational education because of a mix-up in his tests with another student. With this mix-up and teachers who would not put in the effort to help him succeed occurring, Rose lost all motivation in studying in his classes. Rose finally found a teacher who cared about his success in school and helped Rose get back into regular college-prep classes. This motivation from one teacher helped Rose in going to college and being successful. Where were Rose’s parents when all of this happened? Did they not have a conference with his teachers, or try to help him out with his schoolwork, or did they just not care about their child’s education. Parents are an important role in a child’s education and there are many reasons as to why …show more content…
When a child is in elementary school there are a number of things a parent can particpicate in with their child they are able to go on school field trips, eat lunch, volunteer or even attend class with their child. As the child gets into middle or high school, the options are limited to what the parent can do such as sporting events. Children may also decide that they no longer want their parents involved in school with them, because they may feel embarrassed around their peers. The child’s teacher overload can frustrate parents since most parents like it when their child has only a couple teachers to deal with instead of four to six all year round. Most parents can feel like having to communicate with so many teachers about their child is an overwhelming task and feel like the teachers should know their child better. If parents did not feel so over whelmed as their child’s education broadens, they might feel less of a threat coming from

As a teacher of young children I am aware of the need to involve parents in child’s educational and developmental process. Each parent is an expert and a valuable partner when it comes to identifying and meeting their child’s needs. As I reflect on my teaching practices, I make sure tha I provide a variety of opportunities for parents as well as family members to participate in activities and experiences planned for their child. By valuing parents’ involvement in the total education of their children, it shows my competence in meeting Standard IV.…

Both Mike Rose and Richard Rodriguez shared fairly different views on how growing up in school affected their lives; they hated it. “I just wanna be average” and “The achievement of desire” express the feeling that their author’s severely disliked their childhoods, and blaming most of the negative points in that time period where they were attending school. In fact, they are almost the exact opposites of each other. In “I just wanna be average”, Rose writes his extreme dislike for the school system, and his undedicated, unfocused, nonchalant attitude on school. He hated history, textbooks, chemistry, math, and Shakespeare, and thought of them to be a waste of time. Rose would’ve rather spent his time with his friends, hanging out, and playing sports. Nearing the end of his highschool life, Rose was able to understand the importance of an education, and with help from his teachers, he was able to go to college despite his grades, and become a successful writer.…

    Neglecting of Students

In the story “I Just Wanna Be average” poetry, scholarly research, textbook, and book writer Mike Rose recounts his years in vocational track school. I agree with Rose’s views on teachers not valuing their students and them neglecting them as well. The sentence “I just want to be average” is what manifested this whole paper. Not an individual not a person at high standards but just average, Roses approach to this issue is very significant and formal. He fixates on this sentence because he then realizes that those in the vocational school were trying to be someone else instead of themselves. “Reject the confusion and frustration by openly defining yourself as the Common Joe” (Rose 3). The common joe was exactly what the students were trying to be.…

When you start school you are thrown into a mix of people, some can read already and write while others don’t even know their name. If you start kindergarten and you are already so far behind than it’s hard to catch back up. If the child wasn’t shown their numbers before because their parents didn’t help them very much while they were growing up. If as a parent you isolate your children by not educating them or leaving them by themselves while doing homework than they’re going to have a hard time trying to figure out what to do, and they know that their parents aren’t there to check in on the homework. Michael Thompson, Ph.D. "A parent may be working out of the home, or need to be working in the home and cooking dinner. So if you are home, stay close, and if you are not there, have another adult check to make sure it 's going OK. And remember that all homework is not equal, so not everything…

First of all, a writer writes an introduction to describe his or her topic and the problem or question it raises. A good thesis is always the answer to a good question, posed to or about the text. The writer should not usually write the question in the actual essay, but should be able to formulate one about which he or she has come to a conclusion. For example, the writer may want to write about Jane Austen’s book Pride and Prejudice. He or she may be interested in answering this question: how do Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy develop truly virtuous character since they are surrounded and influenced by a world and by people with such questionable values? The thesis is the writer’s conclusive statement on the problem or issue or topic specifically explained in the introduction. This thesis statement must follow the introductory information, at the end of the introductory paragraph, and be stated as an assertion, clearly, straightforwardly, and specifically. Here is an example of a possible thesis, using the idea from Pride and Prejudice: “Although the hero and heroine of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice are surrounded by a world in which values seem badly skewed, the very obstacles set in the way of the lovers, including within themselves, create a testing ground for the development of virtues such as patience, trust, determination, and the ability to choose the good no matter what the consequences may be.” The writer now knows exactly where he or she is going with the essay.…

The first teacher in every child's life is his parent. Studies indicate that parental expectations towards education is evident in a child's behavior. This is true no matter the type of family dynamics. Children with parents who nurture learning in a positive encouraging way have a better chance of succeeding in school. Too much encouragement or a parent with a negative, non-caring attitude towards learning may lead to an undue pressure on the child causing anxiety, stress, underachievement and rebellion.…

I believe that good communication skills with people you come into contact with is vital to establish a relationship, ether if it is a professional relationship or a personal relationship. However Communication with someone who has a mental health illness can be harder and needs more skills than the ‘Normal’ person. The ranges of communication include, firstly understanding a person’s needs, knowing what their condition is and having the knowledge of their illness. The persons illness and medication they are taking could have a big effect on their communication, such as if they have lost speech, or if someone has a illness that makes them untrusting of everyone. If someone’s medication makes them drowsy and unable to absorb information properly ,so a professional would need to find ways around this to be able to have a effective communication with that person so their needs can be met.…
