The film that I chose to watch and analyze is the Brazilian film City of God. The movie takes place in one of Rio de Janeiro’s 500 favelas, a favela known as the City of God. The name of the city is disturbingly ironic, as most of the activities that take place in the slum are decidedly ungodly. The movie, spanning three decades, chronicles the lives of some of the residents, most adolescent, from their pre-pubescent years to their upbringing into the criminal underworld.…

Some of the major people include Andy Warhol, played by David Bowie (RIP), who was his mentor, and Rene Ricard, played by Michael Wincott, was an art critic and poet. His most steady relationship is with Gina, a waitress that he met and drew in syrup on a table at the cafe she worked in. She is played by Claire Forlani. Basquait interacts with many other people as well. Some in an inspirational, such as the limo driver that conversed with, but also some people negatively. He believed that the white woman he worked for as an electricians assistant looked down at him because she didn’t know his name, and asked him to move things out of the way for her. He also thought that people should know him because of his art and graffiti that marked many streets.…

For my final project, I choose to watch Jaws directed by Steven Spielberg, 1975. Jaws is set on Amity Island known as a popular summer tourist destination. As the town prepares for its annual Fourth of July parade, a shark lurks in the waters threating the town’s main source of summer income. After multiple shark attacks, three men take it upon themselves to catch the great white shark that has plans on ruining the summer.…

This week I had the good fortune of viewing one of the greatest films of the late 1970s, the 1979 film Manhattan, directed by Woody Allen. A film I would consider to be one of his greatest works. The film takes place in, obviously, New York, especially on the island of Manhattan. While most people would say this is merely the setting of the film, a more astute film viewer would realize that the story of film is a reflection of the city itself, a romantic city of light and darkness.…

The film Black Hawk Down by Ridley Scott is an action packed war drama that supports the theory Americans risked their lives to end the civil war in Somalia, East Africa, 1993. Many propaganda techniques were utilised throughout this film to put the Americans in the good spotlight for a Western audience. Propaganda is defined as “information, of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view” (Definition of Propaganda, 2012). Throughout this film the director has utilised many techniques, these include stereotyping, euphoria, demonizing the enemy and bandwagon (Propaganda Techniques, 2007).…

Still, there’s no denying that it was 1999’s The Blair Witch Project was a huge came changer for the genre. “The film itself grossed nearly $250 million worldwide total remains the highest box office tally ever for a found-footage film.” (Box Office Mojo) The Blair Witch Project is a story of three documentary film students that head off to investigate the legends of the Blair Witch. Heather, Joshua, and Michael enter the woods around Burkittsville, Maryland, with two cameras. Heather wants to document everything in as straightforward way as possible and keeps the viewer engaged with the story. Being a mockumentary, The Blair Witch Project primarily draws on all the elements of the documentary genre to achieve its effects. Additionally, the film had a brilliant marketing campaign that used the internet in a way that had not really been done before, causing many potential viewers to question whether or not the story behind the film was fictional. This was a crucial part of the film’s appeal, and the viral marketing campaign both helped get word out about the film and left people questioning its authenticity. As in most found footage films, we begin the film by knowing the fate of the characters due to the fact that the film is formatted as found footage that has been discovered in their absence which can contribute to the narrative because we know these characters are…

With a cast full of Oscar hall-of-famers one would think Contagion would live up to its star-studded cast, yet it falls short. As the fast-moving epidemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. At the same time, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart.”…

In I Am Legend, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Neville (Will Smith) is possibly the last living man on earth since the outbreak of a genetically-engineered variant of the measles virus that causes victims to become predatory and vampiric beings. He roams the barren streets of New York with his trusty companion, Sam, to find food and supplies for survival in this dreadful time. Amidst the silent, but overbearing time, Robert Neville test serums on lab rats in hopes to find a cure for the infected humans. While hunting for food one day, Neville and Sam come into contact with a group of “Darkseekers” and nearly lose their lives in a petrifying incident. After almost dying, the officer comes up with the idea to capture one of the infected to test his cures on. To set the trap, Neville laid a tarp out that was rigged to collapse when triggered. Since the “Darkseekers” are attracted to blood, he broke a vile of his own blood on the tarp to draw them in. After capturing a female victim, he takes…
