ABSTRACT

The development of HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) transmission system dates back to the 1930s when mercury arc rectifiers were invented. Since the 1960s, HVDC transmission system is now a mature technology and has played a vital part in both long distance transmission and in the interconnection of systems. Transmitting power at high voltage and in DC form instead of AC is a new technology proven to be economic and simple in operation which is HVDC transmission. HVDC transmission systems, when installed, often form the backbone of an electric power system. They combine high reliability with a long useful life. An HVDC link avoids some of the disadvantages and limitations of AC transmission. HVDC transmission refers to that the AC power generated at a power plant is transformed into DC power before its transmission. At the inverter
(receiving side), it is then transformed back into its original AC power and then supplied to each household. Such power transmission method makes it possible to

Signal spectrum – a transmission contains lack of high frequency components which means less bandwidth is required and direct current component is also desirable. With no dc component, ‘ac’ coupling via transformer is possible. Finally, the magnitude of the effects of signal distortion and interference depend on the spectral properties of the transmitted signal.…

A DC electromagnetic generator produces direct power and also, electrical power (just like the AC generator). It is also produced based on same fundamental principle of Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic induction where whenever a conductor cuts magnetic flux, dynamically induced electromotive force is produced, and this causes current to flow if the conductor/conductors is closed. The direction of induced current is given by Fleming’s right hand rule.…

DC faced a sharp decline after the ‘war’ but has made a comeback since then (Lantero 3). This may be attributable to the invention of semiconductors and their ability to limit the voltage of a DC system (Abengoa 2). A study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology shows that more appliances run on DC energy than what was previously thought (Fairley 1). AC is more prevalent but DC is the main source of power for emergency generators and the product of renewable energy sources (Fairley 1).…

Westinghouse and Tesla 's AC generators overcame these disadvantages as, through the use of transformers, the voltage could be increased or decreased as was required. This allowed AC to be generated at moderately low voltages, increased to high voltages when needed to journey long distances, and…

By using alternating current society is now able to transmit power far greater distances than was previously possible with direct current. Without alternating current many residential and rural homes and facilities would be without power. Electricity would also be much more expensive than it is today due to this limited range. Induction motors provide certain advantages over direct current motors. While DC motors are used in small appliances, AC motors provide much more power. These motors are used in large electrical equipment that requires copious amounts of power. Additionally, alternating current can be transformed into current from voltage or voltage from current much easier than direct current (“The Nikola Tesla”). By using alternating current a simple transformer is all that is needed to transfer the AC into usable direct current at the power lines near homes. Undeniably, the creation of alternating current has benefited the world…

Though electricity began with Ancient Greeks when they realized that rubbing amber created static electricity, it wasn’t until the late 1800s that Thomas Edison discovered the need to power the light bulb he improved upon. After opening the first commercial power plant, Edison was only able to distribute electricity to one square mile of Manhattan and so it was found that using direct current (DC) was not an ideal way to get electricity distributed across long distances. Around that same time, Nikola Tesla was diligently trying to master the alternate current (AC) motors and generators even though he was discouraged from doing so. After proving his invention to be a practical solution for this problem, George Westinghouse purchased Tesla’s patents and opened his first power plant that supplied AC electricity to parts of Massachusetts and New York. With AC being able to distribute over long distances, this was the obvious choice and is now used all over the world. With electricity being widely used, new inventions using this technology started to be developed. Soon the refrigerator, washing machine, clothes dryer, and vacuum cleaner were on the market using the very technology on which they existed.…

Power inverters convert DC voltage from a battery to AC voltage used by appliances in our homes. Power inverters are alternatives to electric power generators when it comes to supplying backup or standby power during power failure. Standby power is now critical in Nigeria because of epileptic power supply in most countries. Find power inverter dealers and some reason why power inverters may be preferred over petrol-driven electric generators for backup power supply.…
