Trip essay

We set out to go on what seemed to be a normal hunting trip, but there was nothing normal about it, this is the story of adventure. As we drove into the remote town of Alamakee Iowa. We turned down a gravel road and stop at a small cabin settled in the woods. We walk to the house and knock on the door, we hear someone walking around inside and Matt opens up the door and welcomes us. We get ready to go on the hunting trip and I unscrew the magazine tube cap on my gun and remove the barrel and run a cleaning patch through it, then put it back together and get ready to go on the trip. We then hop in the truck and start driving further into the woods. It took a few minutes but we finally get there and we hop out of the truck and silently shut

We gave up and were walking back to the truck when we saw a deer about 150 yards away. Because we were leaving I decided to steady the gun take aim and fire. The deer ran back in the woods so we go look to see if there was any blood. As we get closer we see nothing we look around a bit and there was still nothing before we go back to the truck Matt checks around more and spots a deer lying on the ground. When I had shot it it had died almost instantly and there must have been a deer that was next to it that we didn't see and it was that deer that ran into the woods. We clean the deer then drag it a few yards to the truck and put it in the back. We drive to the nearest store and buy a few bags of ice and stuff them inside of it to keep it cool during the night. Even if we didn't get a deer it would have been fun. During the trip I also learned a lot about deer that I didn't know

We set up and went to bed early. I could hardly sleep. The whole night is kind of a blur, but the next morning around 5:00, my dad woke me up and we all set out into the darkness. Hiking up to the area where we thought the elk would be, we saw a huge, 8 point bull elk, but it was before shooting light and we had to let him run off. After this, my dad and I found a small meadow in and sat down to wait for shooting light. As the meadow filled with light, we heard tons of shots all around, but mostly down the hill below us, we saw nothing, so after an hour or so, we moved on. After a while trekking through some thick brush, we found a clearing. The cycle of hiking, waiting, and seeing nothing repeated itself a few times. Then, in the closing minutes of daylight, we came across Kotchwar, who had downed a cow elk an hour before. We all headed back to the spike camp. Kotchwar headed back to the main camp, and my dad and me felt some disappointment watching him leave, but this had happened before and my dad had gotten an elk, so we had hope. We made these horrible MRE like things for dinner and went to bed, feeling optimistic for the coming…

3 people fell into a ditch as we were running and were slaughtered by the bear. Everyone was panicking and running, and many fell over and were attacked by the bear. My group got away by doing sharp turns and running around trees, but was badly injured. I was horrified and grabbed some leaves to help my group, but only myself, Froog, Googa, Berg, and the dogs lived, and a majority of our group was dead. We walked out of the woods, and buried the bodies.…

The first hour and a half we listened to the birds and watched the squirrels eat away at the trail mix. The sight of this made me hungry so I got out my peanut butter sandwich and red Gatorade. Around 4:45, I was lightly sleeping when I heard a loud snap from a few hundred yards away. My mind began racing as I tried to figure out what could have made that noise. Every couple minutes I could hear another branch break and it was getting closer and closer. An hour later the noise had moved from a few hundred yards in front of us to less than 30 yards behind us. “Don’t move” my dad whispered. We could hear leaves crunching under the feet of whatever was behind us. The noise continued onto the path that leads right to the bait pile. I slowly turned my head to the left and saw a 325-pound bear with a furry, black coat. Instantly my breathing became heavy, my whole body was shaking and my heart was about to pound out of my chest. I grabbed by gun and raised it to my shoulder, almost dropping it from all my shaking. I rested my Remington pump shotgun on the chilly aluminum edge of the Rivers Edge tree stand. “Click” I took the safety off of my shotgun and looked down the iron sights. The bear was licking the frosting on top of the white cedar log. BANG! The bear spun and took off into the thick green underbrush and fell after 20 yards. I couldn’t believe it; I was so excited. My dad and I waited 30 minutes and then we got down from the tree stand and followed the trail to where the bear was laying. I reached down and touched the smooth, plush coat of the bear, thanking it for the meat it would provide for my…

When he got a little closer, he saw a very large animal who was covering an abnormally large amount of ground in a short amount of time. He describes the animal as to cover about fifteen to twenty feet in just two strides, while not running. The creature made absolutely no noticeable noise. He mentions what he saw was the creature standing seven to seven and a half feet tall and an estimated five hundred pounds in weight. He describes the creature as being muscular and covered with dark fur, with long arms and hunched over posture. The deer hunter states that the creature moved quickly down the hillside and was gone in just a few seconds. Like both of the above incidents, it happened in a wooded area which provides plenty of coverage for the…

It’s November, so that means its deer season. Every year deer season starts on the second weekend of November and last for ten days. I get really excited around August because during this time my family and I start exploring the woods looking for signs of deer. We look for signs like scrapes on trees, footprints, and tall grass that looks like it has been laid on and flattened. We set salt blocks out around our tree stands and set our cameras out hoping to catch a picture of a big buck. After we finish all the preparing we wait until the first week of November. During the first week of November we go back to our stands, check the salt blocks, set new blocks out, and grab our cameras to take back home. Once we get home we look at the pictures…

This is the start of what seemed to be just another original deer opener. Dad and I got up around five o'clock and we put all of our hunting gear on. We then grabbed our snacks and some Halloween candy. Now it is about five thirty and we are on our way to our deer stand, which is about fifteen minutes from our house. This year something felt different. As we were driving on the road we were almost to the deer stand and a ten point buck runs out in front of us. He started running right for our deer stand so we had to hurry up and get there. When we finally get up in the stand and got the heater turned on we are all situated for the long wait.…

It is a freezing twenty-two degrees outside. Even though it is still too dark to see, as you look over the hills, you see a breathtaking sunrise that will soon creep through the heavy fog. Every breath that you take is like smoke coming out of a dragon's nostrils. As you are waiting patiently, still, and quietly, you finally see your kill, the white-tail deer. Without a doubt, the white-tail deer should be hunted.…

I brought my dogs along with me to help me out. We were walking through the forest, it was pretty warm and humid in the area, the day was going pretty well. I shot down 2 deer, and a squirrel. My dogs mostly took care of the squirrel. As I waited on them I heard this sound coming from the other side of the forest. I wasn't sure what it was but then I realized it sounded like... people! I looked at my dogs and it seemed like they heard it too, as they perked up their ears I realized it sounded like laughter. It was always very rare for people to be hunting early in the morning, especially on a Tuesday. I decided just to ignore it but as we kept walking through the forest it got even…

    The Great Outdoors

Not only is hunting an exhilarating experience but so is the feeling of being surrounded by wilderness. During winter times since I was 12 years old, my father would take me out on long drives in the middle of winter to hunting sites just outside of Edmonton. What made the drive not seem so long was the scenic route we would always take. Every once in a while I would see little white rabbits hopping around and leaving miniature footprints all in the snow next to the road. Further down the road we would pass a fairly big hill that had two pine trees at the top of it. I always wondered how long they had been there considering the fact that they were over thirty feet high. Finally we would get to the hunting ground and make are way down to a little patch of brush where we would crouch and wait for the deer to pass by. The feeling of the cold snow crunching under my boots, the frost covered branches of the bush we were nestled under, and all the little footprints that surrounded us gave me a feeling of unity with nature. After hiding in our spots for a long while, usually until my feet and toes were completely frozen it seemed, my father would whisper “Here comes one right now”. A few moments later I’d hear a loud bang and we’d be back on the road with our trophy and bragging rights. We have carried on this tradition every…
