Before we begin to look at the painting that I have chosen let us first learn a few things and key terms. For this paper we were asked to explore the text, context, subtext and modern significance of a work of art from the time period we are studying. So I feel it is best if I explain to each of you the definition is of these three things. According to our text book, the text is, “any primary source refers to its medium (that is, what it is made of), its form (its outward shape), and its content (the subject it describes).” The word context is used to, “describe the historical and cultural environment. The determine the context, we ask: in what time and place did the artifact originate?” Lastly, the term subtext refers to, “its secondary and implied meanings. The subtext embraces the emotional or intellectual messages embedded in, or implied by, a work of art.” (The Humanistic Tradition, 5th Edition, Preface).

Now that we have the basics out of the way I can share with you some interesting information about the artist that I have chosen. After looking through our text over and over and trying to find an artist who inspired me that would actually require me to do more research I narrowed my choice down to a piece created by Giorgio De Chirico. I decided on this artist because I really like his ideas, for example, “de Chirico explained, there are more enigmas in the shadow of a man who walks in the sun than in all the religions of past, present, and future. De Chirico anticipated a mode of representation known as magic realism, in which commonplace objects and events are exaggerated or juxtaposed in unexpected ways to evoke a mood of mystery of fantasy.” (The Humanistic Tradition, 5th Edition, Chapter 33). De Chirico, by occupation was a painter. He was born on July 10, 1888, in Volos, Greece, and he died on November

    While reading Three articles concerning the collapse of the maya civilization, I read about debates why the civilization fell apart. Ancient Mayan empire was approximately A.D 250 to A.D 900.     The functionalists and the Marxists both believe that the education system benefits everyone, but both have different views on society. The Marxist views of the education system are that there are conflicts because there is an inequality between the working class and the higher classes. They believe that there are two different classes which education produces, and that is the working class and the ruling class. The people who don't achieve good grades in school and who aren't very bright, will be known in society as the working class, and so won't have very good status jobs in society, and the people that do brilliantly in school and who are very intelligent are the ones who get good jobs and important jobs in society, so they are seen as the ruling class, which is above the working class. This theory that the Marxists has, is similar to the theory that the functionalists have, and that is that the education system could also be known as a role allocation. This is where a person’s job is allocated to them through their grades from school, so if the person does well, then they will get a more important job, however if a person does not do that well, then the person will have a low status job in society. However, the functionalist's view of society is that it is meritocratic, which means that those who do well will achieve more in life and will receive rewards for their hard work, which fits in with the role allocation idea of those who do well in school, will end up having the better jobs in the adult world, and that the role of education benefits everyone equally. The Marxists believe that the role of education benefits the ruling class only, and that is where there is a difference between the two theorists.…

    From my own views humanities is the study of humans from different time frames and the cultures and how it changed up until today’s time frame. The development of humanities was established from the modern times when things were done by hand for example farming, when you want fresh food farmers would plant the seed and attend to the farm as needed as far as today’s world artificial food is made and many of it is not health nor does it taste the same. In today’s modern world machines do all the work for you and it has taking away lots of knowledge from today’s society because if machines break down most people would not know how to survive. Also this goes for the different categories such as art/paintings back in the modern day’s paintings where hand painted such as the sisten chapel, it was painted on the celling by man as for today it would most likely be laid by stencil and painted which in that case there’s no hard work put into it. There were significant movements in cultures from the school views as they started out in the ancient Egypt time frame the kids started school at 4yrs old. In ancient Egypt, boys from wealthy families started school at the age of four. Before a child started his first year of school, his father decided what his son's occupation would be in the future. Egyptians were very practical, so kids at schools were taught only the subjects that would be useful in their career. The only boys who were taught mathematics were the ones that were going to be tax collectors. The ability to read and write was considered a very important skill because if you could read and write you could have a well-paid job, and respect of your fellow countrymen. Boys had lessons at the school master's house. They walked there early in the morning carrying a basket with bread cakes and two jugs of beer that their mothers had prepared for lunch.     “The Swimmer” is a short story written by the author John Cheever. This interesting and erratic short story is about the main character Neddy Merrill. Neddy Merrill is an ostensibly light hearted, vigorous, happy and youthful man in an affluent community, who decides one summer afternoon that he will swim his way home from a cocktail party through the array of public and private swimming pools scattered throughout his neighborhood. As the story evolves, it becomes clear that Neddy’s journey may represent more than taking a swim on a warm summer day. Through increasingly strange encounters with his neighbors and resurfacing ideas of some serious life problems, the once energetic Neddy begins to transform into an exhausted and disordered older man. John Cheever accomplished this phenomenal short story using a diversity of literary elements and strategies. The proper use of literary elements enables Cheever to keep readers interested while reading the story. Literary elements are very relevant to short stories, establishing their plot, mood, and theme. Through the use of a variety of literary elements such as point of view, imagery, symbolism, and tone, John Cheever magnificently enhances his superb short story “The Swimmer”.…
