How strong a community stands is determined by the qualities of the people within it. In William Shakespeare's Romeo&Juliet and William Golding's Lord of the Flies, it is debatable whether one's human qualities serve to break or build the society around them. Unquestionably human qualities destroy a community rather than serving to build it. By examining the outcomes of anger ,immaturity, and fear, it will clearly prove that human qualities tend to break community. An ancient family feud driven by anger had done nothing but tear society apart. The Prince was quoted, " Three civil brawls bred an airy word/By thee old Capulet and Montague,/ Have thrice disturbed our streets." (I, i,83-86) For generations an unknown hate has taken over the Capulet and Montague households causing many brawls amongst themselves . As the quote mentions the two families have disturbed the streets of Verona three times because of their anger towards each other. The anger that has built up over the years has not only broken the community, but made the two families drift away. Therefore this anger that dwells within the two families is a factor in breaking their community. Jack has so much anger toward Ralph and the idea of order and democracy that he creates his own tribe which ends in savagery..An example of this is shown in chapter eight of Lord of the Flies, ' " I'm not going to be part of Ralph's lot... I'm going off by myself... Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come too."'(Golding, pg 140- 141) At this point in the book the boys have been stranded on an island with no sign of adult life around. These young boys have just got things together forming a community with democracy but when anger is introduced in the novel , the utopia is destroyed.. After forming the democracy Ralph was elected leader and this was where Jack 's anger sprouted. From then on the anger within Jack grew throughout the novel until a point where the rage overthrew his logic and his reasoning. When Ralph said that Jack's hunters were just as afraid as he was, his anger reached its climax. Therefore both the households and Jack display anger as one of the main qualities that destroy a society. They both let anger overpower the situation causing chaos, terrible decisions made by impulse, and disruption amongst the community.
