Human Papillomavirus Essay
The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection(STI) that affects both men and women. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC)
Every year in the U.S 27,000 people are diagnosed with cancer caused by HPV(1CDC September 30th,2015, December 28th,2015) This sexually transmitted disease has the potential to greatly affect the Reproductive health of women and catastrophic affects on men as well. These statistics are alarming and a cause for concern. Increasing public awareness is needed to effectively combat this disease.

The World Health organization (WHO) has attributed Cervical cancer in some cases to Hpv.
Additional evidence has also linked HPV with cancers of the penis, anus,vulva, and …show more content…
Currently, there are two prominent vaccines available used for early prevention measures. Gardasil and Cervarix which are approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) for use. These vaccines however, come with concerns related to well documented side effects. Despite these well documented side effects,parents are encourage to discuss with their healthcare provider if this is safe for their children due to the recommendation, that girls at the age of 9-13 and young boys beginning at the age of 11-12.This is thought to benefit girls by reducing the spread of infection(CDC December 2,2015)

Currently, Hpv infections do not cause symptoms, however genital warts has been the most visible cause of Hpv infections in both men and women. Women for example who develop Hpv during pregnancy can get genital warts and develop abnormal changes on the cervix(CDC3).
As noted earlier, there can be side effects associated with this vaccine ranging from miscarriages, paralysis and even death. According to Natural News(April 19,2016 Jennifer Lee Reynolds: Japanese patients) There is a class action lawsuit on behalf of twelve patients who claim they were not properly warned of the severity of the side effects and are now suing the manufacturers GlaxoSmithKline. Once a person has been exposed to this virus they will pass it to every partner they are sexually intimate with in their life time. Until recently it was believed that the most dangerous consequences of this virus were cervical and vaginal cancers in women. Recently it was discovered that HPV also causes cancers of the anus, penis, mouth and throat. The study included 1,100 men, ages 18 to 70. They were from the United States, Brazil and Mexico. All were tested for HPV when they enrolled in the study. Half the men were infected, the author told Reuters Health news service. They also were tested every six months for another 2 to 3 years. Researchers found that 6% of the men became newly infected each year with HPV Type 16. (Harvard) The HPV vaccination protects against the four most commonly found strains of HPV. There are two low risk and two high risk strains that are most commonly found. Type 6 and 11 are low risk strains of the virus and cause genital warts. Type 16 and 18 are high risk strains and cause cellular changes that can become cancers.
