After researching about the topic, I was able to learn many things about ancient China, the Han and Tang dynasties in particular, and how important research is when reading literature. Since this poem is dated between these dynasties, what I did was to research about Zhou Yu and her relationship with Xiao Qiao. I initially thought that the musician was some other person who was trying to get the attention of Zhou Yu but after a reading Han Dynasty and Tang Dynasty, both made by Hays (2008), I was able to learn that the poem was trying to capture the courtship between the two. Xiao Qiao, knowing that Zhou Yu was sensitive to mistakes when playing instruments, would touch the wrong note to catch the attention of Zhou Yu. Another thing was the setting during that time. I really had a hard time trying to imagine the place since I thought that by just placing dragons and by painting the palace red and yellow would already make it Chinese. I learned in this exercise that history is critical when trying to get a context of not only a poem, but also different types of literature. When I was in the library, I was able to find mural paintings from the Han to Tang dynasty and this was able to help me visualize the palace better. Also, the other websites now gave me an idea of what were the valuable items and decorations of their time, jade and ceramics to name a few. I was also able to find out why the reason why the poem did not rhyme or was somewhat plain in my opinion. According to Mazanec (2007), the rhymes of the poem have been lost but it still has maintained the number of lines as well as the physical details of the poem. This just goes to show how critical research is when trying to study literature. With limited research, I was able to expand my schema on ancient China, specifically the Han and Tang dynasties, and I was able to find out some repercussions of trying to translate poems from different languages.

Emperor K’ang-hsi was one of the greatest Chinese emperors of all time. Ruling from 1662 to 1722 he was also one of the longest ruling emperors in Chinese history and for that matter the world. K’ang-hsi brought China to long-term stability and relative wealth after years of war and chaos. Jonathan Spence writes from the eyes of K’ang-hsi getting his information from K’ang-hsi’s own writings. Though a little biased towards himself this book still provides important insight into his mind. Emperor of China is divided into six parts; In Motion, Ruling, Thinking, Growing Old, Sons, and Valedictory.…

The Tang Dynasty (618-907) was a time of slightly deconstructed misogyny which allowed for the advancement of women. In fact, the Tang Dynasty experienced a small interruption with the second Zhou Dynasty (690-705) established by the only female monarch in Chinese history—Empress Wu. Empress Wu rose to power through ruthless tactics to move her from the emperor’s concubine, to the emperor’s consort, and eventually to the position of empress of China. Her significance as a Chinese ruler is exemplified through her use of the Chinese secret service, her influence over the civil service examination, her edicts to relieve the lower classes, and her lasting impact on China’s military and diplomacy.…

Rhyme is the repetition of similar sounds, it is usually identified with lowercase letters, and a new letter is used to identify each new end sound. This poem has a very hard structure to get, it is a six stanza poem that is very complex with feelings and adventures. “Of purple cloth and copper skin” purple is the colour of royalty. She is journeying in the world at large lost in the royal city and describing the images and their effects on her inner spirit. The journey ends with enlightenment in the countryside where encounters nature and other wonderful things.…

"A Beautiful Girl Combs Her Hair" certainly is filled with beautiful imagery. I could very easily picture the girl "standing on the ivory bed, loosening her hair, watching the mirror..." The poem also contains metaphors. The speaker refers to the girl as a "lotus blossum" and "a wild goose on the sand." I especially liked line 17, "drop the jade comb-no sound." Maybe this is where the translation differs, because it doesn't read "she dropped the jade comb" or even "drops the jade comb" with the subject understood. The image that I see, however, is a beautiful, heavy jade comb falling on a bed so fluffy, pillowy, and soft that the comb doesn't make a sound. The luxurious bed, the silk curtains, the cherry blossoms just down the steps, and the girl's long, thick, perfumed hair make me visualize a paradise as rich as the imagery itself. It seems the speaker is the one who is "Awake at dawn" as the first line says. "The lotus blossom wakes" in line 8. Perhaps he woke early to go watch this girl whom he admires wake up. Or maybe he is so in love with her that he could not sleep for thinking of her. He was already "Awake at dawn" and couldn't stand being without her any longer so he had to go see…

The Tang dynasty is one of the most spectacular dynasties of Imperial China. It saw its founding in 618 by the Li family and knew, thereafter a majestic expansion and an extremely diverse growth and development for almost the rest 200 years. From these developments, the abundance of poetry is particularly distinguishable, as it was an era of intellectual, artistic and literal productivity. Since poetry occupied a paramount position, it was also a reflection of the singular conditions of the Dynasty, the way people lived during that period of time, and most of all the way of thinking and their ideologies philosophies and doctrines. Therefore, those poems highlights the essence of Confucianism and Daoism, two major schools…

    Chinese Interrogations

Over a hundred poems have been recorded and they were rediscovered in 1970. During the interrogations that could last up to several days the Chinese were asked about their families, and where their village was located in their native country. Due to the language barrier miscommunications were common during the interrogations which led to more deportations. The detainees were held for long periods of times, some up to two years and were interrogated repeatedly during their stay. Some of the carvings that the immigrants wrote still exist today. Some say “I was here”, or some simply just say a name but most are carvings of poems written in…

    My Last Duchess

    • 451 Words

Usually, children’s nursery stories and songs have words that correspond in sound. Rhymes are typically in more with Mother Goose tales, than in a recollection of one’s dead wife. Thus, the rhyming in the poem suggests the Duke doesn’t take the death of late Duchess very seriously and with much grief. The fact that lines 43-46, “Oh sir, she smiled, no doubt,/Whene’er I passed her; but who passed without/Much the same smile. This grew: I gave commands/Then all smiles stopped together. There she stands…” rhyme is a little disturbing. Browning makes the Duke lightheartedly, poetically and with distinctive style tell the servant that he is the one who caused the Duchess to stop smiling. It seems as though the Duke gets a pleasure from giving a command and having it obeyed immediately. If the Duke believed his late (and noticeably unnamed) wife was so easy to manipulate, it puts her in a place of subservience and objectification. No longer is the late Duchess a young-woman with feeling, but an aesthetically pleasing entity that is to work to please him. This exposed the Duke’s misogyny.…

As I read the poem entitled “On Hearing Her Play the Harp” for the first time, I got surprised of the fact that the poem has only four lines and that the words were pretty simple and easy to understand for first time readers but in fact the poem had a deeper and a more interesting meaning behind it. At my initial reading with no little or no research at all, I visualized everything as a white young pretty woman who comes from a rich and powerful family because of the fact that she is playing a “golden –fretted harp and as she plays through the frets of the notes, I imagined Chou You a young and a handsome rich lad which she likes, enters the room she is in, and to be noticed by this young man she decides to think of a way to attract the eyes of the young Chou Yu, so she decides to use the obvious, which is to attract him by playing wrong notes now and then, and by doing I visualize Chou Yu falling in love in with the beautiful white harp player. Being ignorant or knowledgeable about certain things can really change your perspective about your environment and a lot more like in this poem, as I read the poem a second time with the information I had gathered with my research in Chinese History. My studying about Chinese History changed how I interpreted the poem. Changes like how I must stress on details in order for my readers to understand the setting Chou Yu and the beautiful musician are in. For example I did not describe the setting at all in which the girl was in and how she played the harp and what kind of harp was it and how she attracted in full detail Chou Yu. After giving a little minor tweaks to my interpretation this is it how it starts. A big yet simple wooden house, overlooking the vast farmlands of China with doors similar to that of the Japanese and beautiful wide windows which gives the house the bright and fresh feeling. And in this house’ function room you may find a young woman with skin like white…
