Hum176 Week 1
Hello,
I hear so many good things and am so fascinated with what you can do with the Internet. Finding all this information so quickly must make your life very easy. But please tell me: how do you assess the value of all this information you find on the Internet? How can you be sure that it is reliable and credible? Also, I have heard the term “digital divide.” What exactly does it mean, and how do you think this divide could be bridged?
Thank you for helping me to understand these issues!
Best regards,
Your friend

Hello Friend,

I would first like to start off with that having the technology and being able to find information digitally and very quickly is a very nice luxury to have and it does help with time management and the fast paced world that we live in. I’m glad that you asked about the assessing of the value of the information as well as well as the reliability and credibility of the vast amount of information that is available by searching upon the web. My response to you on the value is that if it adds to your knowledge and is the kind of information that you seek then it’s valuable. For instance, say you had a split seam on your carpet and couldn’t afford to have a flooring company come repair it at the moment. Doing a quick FYI search for carpet seam repairs will lead to sites that can provide you with the knowledge you need to either enact repairs yourself or decide that it’s a little beyond your ability and wait until professional assistance can be afforded. This is just one example of the value but there are so many more that I could spend hours typing them. As far as reliability and credibility, you need to use some common sense and do your research when considering what you read and how you use that information. There are some steps that can help to find the answers that will best help with what you are looking for. The process is called media literacy and it basically helps you to take account for what you find and how you use it and what you do to help make the content correct and appropriate. The first step is the description, typing in a search for what you want to find. Next is analyzing the information and interpreting what you read to evaluate whether it’s appropriate or not. You can look for other sources to compare information to or if there is a cite or reference to the information, look up the references and seek further information as to the authors resume or accreditations. The final step is engaging in the process if the information you have found is not correct or totally biased and not acceptable. There are things you can do to be responsible in getting it amended or even becoming a volunteer to help correct such errors. Now, the digital divide is a complex issue that affects millions of people through-out the world. Basically, you have the side that has computers and the internet, who can afford to pay for these services. On the other side, you have people who don’t have these devices and are somewhat at a disadvantage in the modern world. Many official documents, medical information and researchable information exist only on the web which creates the divide even further. Another aspect or example of the digital divide is Dial-up service vs. DSL & high speed broadband connections. The higher speed connections cost more so those with less to spend are most likely going to remain with slow dial up service which puts them at a disadvantage when it comes to using the internet. There are some non-profits that are pushing for more public access to computers at no cost, One such is the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation (Yes, that Bill Gates) which is pushing and advocating for more computers at public libraries to lessen the impact of the digital divide for those who are less fortunate than others when it comes to the cost of the services. There is a digital divide as well between large modern countries and the still developing and third world areas that may not even have basic communication devices such as telephones or any modern conveniences. On one side there are advocates who feel the equal opportunity to acquire knowledge should be available to everyone on an even level or playing field while companies would rather that the internet is available on a tiered pay for services level, where the wealthier would have the advantage of being able to afford the higher priced levels and the others would be at slower speeds that would limit their access. Time will tell what happens and the whether the divide splits more or can be lessened. I hope that I have answered your questions and given you some useful information for you to read.

Take Care Your Friend

Is another form of structural configuration better suited to multiproduct, multiservice companies? I do not believe so. As stated on our textbook, “Organizations exist for a purpose.” Further, their design considerations “seek to create organizations that are both efficient and effective” (Baack, Minnick, & Reilly, 2014)With multiproduct, multiservice companies there are many more moving parts, meaning more room for error. All the moving parts must work together, as parts of an engine. A design flaw in one division could affect other divisions, and eventually the entire company. Organizational design must be carefully thought out and planned before executed. Even then, things should be carefully monitored to work out any kinks.…

We are all aware of the illnesses that are developing in our community. Obviously, this is not genetic because it is attacking various members of our community and has done personal research to link the illnesses to our surrounding environment. I have found information in which the community should be aware. After extensive research, I have discovered the symptoms are because of the gas company not following proper procedures while digging in our community. I have spent several months coming to the solution and connecting the problem to the gas company. I first expecting it was something in the water because it seems to be affecting more people in neighborhoods closer to the drilling sites. I am afraid to inform everyone that it will be in all our drinking water before soon.…

The main concerns I have while conducting research, is knowing if the information is accurate for one, and does it really help me in my writing. With sites like Wikipedia, you have to assume they are not the only sites of their nature. While a lot of their information is correct, it may not be accurate or properly cited or documented. Others have to be doing the same thing, like urban dictionary among others. It makes me nervous unless I am on a .org or .gov website. Knowing if the information is truly helping my case, instead of hurting me is the other concern. Things can be taken out of context very easily, and either I, or the reader could mis-understand where I was going with something.…

As a local television Director, my main focus is on the local news and the issues that affect the community in which I live. I would choose to make the closing of the parks for three days my lead story and leave the celebrity death to the bigger networks. Music has been a part of our lives for decades and it is a media that is not going away at all. There are many different types of music from Country, Pop, R&B, Hip Hop, Gospel, Rock, Jazz and many more. Music is more than just entertainment, it something that can relax you, keep you motivated, or be able to relate to what the person is singing about. Music for me is a way to release stress and to relax when I’m in the car going home, at the gym working out, or at home working on my car. Music has been changing with the way technology has and making the quality of sound much better than it was in the 60’s and 70’s. Music is a big influence on young kids and older people and for some it’s a way for them to express themselves through there music. The way people feel about music can change how they feel about something or if there in a bad mood it can help relieve some of the stress. Music has done a lot for different charities from Breast Cancer, Feeding the Hunger, and for Aids research. Music is not just entertainment as most people may think, this is something that is a way of life for the people that produce and write music. So for me music has always been a part of my life and my family and will continue to be a part of my life and my…

It is nice to hear back from you and I would be glad to answer each one of your questions to the best of my ability. There are a lot of things that can be done on the internet. The internet is a wonderful thing to have access to. Having access to the internet can open up a new light to a whole different world. The internet connects people all over the world. The internet gives a person access to lots and lots of information that can be very valuable to them. It is very important in a lot of cases to know rather or not the information that you have accessed is reliable or not. Not know rather or not the information is reliable can cause some major problems. The way that I determine rather or not the information that I access is reliable is by looking for the author’s information so I can know who to give credit to for the information. I consider information credible when it contains a citation. I like to use information that is peer-reviewed because that to means that it is credible because it has been reviewed by other people and deemed to be credible. Knowing if information is credible is important but it is also important to know what to look for the signs that information may not be credible. I prefer to not use information if an author is not known unless I can prove it too credible in other ways. I do not like to use information that can be edited by other people because the information may be their opinion instead of a true fact. I do not like to use information that is out-dated because things in the world is changing at a rapid…

In order to determine if a source is reliable, you should consider where the information originated, research the author, and evaluate all sources. Oftentimes, common sense and knowledge of a particular subject matter can be vital in deciding whether or not a source is reliable and uncovering author bias. Does the information seem objective? Is it contradictory or inconsistent? Does the writer have an obvious agenda? Is there more emotion in the writing than facts? These are questions to ask when determining bias. Also, check to see if the author can substantiate his/her claims with evidence.…
