    “The King’s blood flowed and cries of joy from eight thousand armed men struck my ears.” A man that witnessed the guillotining of King Louis XVI was left with this graphic image of a memorable event leading to the Reign of Terror. The Reign of Terror, otherwise known as the French Revolution, was an attempt to form a new government in France. The citizens of France fought against their government and made a new government led by Maximilen de Robespierre. This new government executed large numbers of individuals whom were “enemies” of the Revolution. This government went so far to preserve their vision of liberty and equality. France was violently demanding “Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity”. Was it necessary to murder 30,000 by guillotining them in the middle of town square for everyone to witness? Did the 2,750 people sentenced to death without any evidence deserve their fate?     R.B. Bernstein, a professor of law at New York Law School, and author of nearly twenty books on Early American legal and diplomatic history, is one of the latest in the long list of historians to attempt to tackle the life of Jefferson. In his work, Thomas Jefferson, Bernstein provides a well-organized and balanced history of Jefferson as he traces his life from his birth into one of Virginia’s wealthiest families, to his death as a man who was ridden with debt and insecure of his place in history. Published in 2003, the strength of Bernstein’s text does not lie in its ability to dissect this enigma of history, but in his ability to lay out his life and offer the facts as they exist without adding too much of his own opinion. Bernstein’s ability to write without muddling up the information he is presenting gives the reader a fairly unbiased look at the man who, in most of the other works he is covered in, takes the form of the authors perceptions. This is not to say that he does not give Jefferson credit for his achievements, or fault him where he deserves it, but Bernstein is able to point out these positive and negative features of Jefferson’s life without adding too much conjecture.…

    At age eleven Equiano’s happiness had a turning point as he was kidnapped along with his sister. They were treated brutally and were forced to do dangerous jobs. If orders were not followed, they were flogged unmercifully. Later, they were separated as they served different masters. He later reunited with his sister when they had the same master. They cried of happiness as their mournful days were over; unfortunately, they were torn apart once again. His pain and anxiety was worse of what he had experienced after her fate. Equiano describes the many days he traveled and the frequent change of masters. He was sold back and forth in the West Indies and England. However, he came into a town called Tinmah in Africa. He then served a wealthy widow. Receiving many benefits as in eating with them and being dressed well, he forgot he was a slave and became adopted to the wealthy family. He was kidnapped again; however, this time, he arrived to a ship where slaves were being marketed. There were thousands of slaves chained under the deck as they were going to be shipped over the “Middle Passage” or across the Atlantic Ocean. The slaves suffocated as there was little room to even move or breathe. The filth and heat brought sickness to the people; therefore, they cried and groaned as they slowly died.     The of event of public execution was considered to educate the citizens of France. Women were encouraged to attend and knit while the executions happen . The Committee of Public Safety directed the executions. Robespierre stated that "terror is nothing other than justice, prompt, severe, inflexible; therefore an emanation of virtue; " Early in 1794 many citizens were arrested.
