The threat from substitutes mostly depends on buyers’ behavior and price performance of substitutes. As the bottlers are the direct buyers of the concentrate producers, the ultimate buyer is the end consumers who drink the soft drinks. The end consumers have wide variety of choices and therefore they have higher tendency to switch to other type of soft drink based on price. As stated in the case, price is a major determinant on the sale of soft drinks.…

There are three major players which are all very important in the production and distribution of carbonated soft drinks. They are concentrate producers, bottlers, and retail outlets. There are over 40 concentrate producers yet there are just three that dominate this industry. They are: Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Dr Pepper/Seven Up. The bottlers convert the basic flavor in carbonated soft drinks then package the drink in bottles or cans and in turn sell specific brands of the concentrate producers. Franchised bottlers’ package and distribute in a defined area and are only allowed to represent non-competitive brands. Retail channels include supermarkets, convenience stores, vending machines, fountain services, and small retail outlets. Supermarkets will account for about 40% of sales (Kerin, 2007).…

Both concentrate producers (CP) and bottlers are profitable. These two parts of the industry are extremely interdependent, sharing costs in procurement, production, marketing and distribution. Many of their functions overlap; for instance, CPs do some bottling, and bottlers conduct many promotional activities. The industry is already vertically integrated to some extent. They also deal with similar suppliers and buyers. Entry into the industry would involve developing operations in either or both disciplines. Beverage substitutes would threaten both CPs and their associated bottlers. Because of operational overlap and similarities in their market environment, we can include both CPs and bottlers in our definition of the soft drink industry. In 1993, CPs earned 29% pretax profits on their sales, while bottlers earned 9% profits on their sales, for a total industry profitability of 14% (Exhibit 1). This industry as a whole generates positive economic profits.…

Exhibit 2 & 6 is an indicator of cut throat competition in the carbonated soft drinks industry. Retail price has rose only by 0.3% from 1988 through 2000 but also keeping in mind that consumer price index rose by 3.2 percent during the same period shows a downward trend in retail price. Also concentrate price has rose by 4.2% during 1988 to 2000. From exhibit 2 we can see an increase in advertisement spending (between 1999 and 2000) of both companies. All these factors lead to declining profits per sale…

The soft drink industry is a highly profitable industry and its success is due to the large consumption of non-alcoholic beverages through which both concentrate producers and bottlers are profitable. Given the U.S. Industry consumption Statistics, Exhibit 1, it is clear that, after deducting beer and wine, soft drinks account for about 90 % of the total liquid consumption, while Coke and Pepsi account for about 75 % of the soft drink industry. The high consumption of CSDs is related to the soft drink industry selling to consumers through five principal channels: food stores, convenience stores, vending, fountain and other. Out of the five channels the case describes vending as the most profitable channel for the soft drink industry as Coke and Pepsi bottlers sell directly to the consumers through vending machines owned by the bottlers.…

Despite the mentioned negative trends, the soft drink industry remained an attractive industry for both concentrate producers (CP) and bottlers. These two parts of the industry are extremely interdependent, sharing costs in procurement, production, marketing and distribution: so, because of operational overlap and similarities in their market environment, we can include both CPs and bottlers in the definition of the soft drink industry. In 2004, CPs earned on average 30% pretax profits on their sales, while bottlers earned on average 9% profits on their sales. The difference in their revenues can be easily explained by the analysis of their costs: concentrate production does not require particular on-going investments, but rather an initial effort to create a…
