Huckleberry Finn Characteristics
Children of alcoholics either become withdrawn and futile or use their arduous experience to become a stronger person. Huckleberry Finn’s father, as known as Pap, is an irredeemable, verbally and physically abusive man due to his addiction. According to statistics of children who come from abusive homes, Huck is more likely to become: suicidal, neurodivergent¹, physically unhealthy, a smoker, drug dealer, criminal and a high school drop-out. By choosing the latter and relying on his wit and intellect, he has surpassed these qualifications. In the beginning of the novel, the reader observes Huck and learns that he is superstitious, uneducated and sometimes illogical. Pap’s sudden appearance and abusive nature come as a surprise to the reader. …show more content…
looting an old house, scamming with ‘royalty’). Additionally, Huck mentions wanting to smoke in Chapter 1, just as statistics predicted (Benoit-Bryan, 1). Throughout the novel, Huck compulsively lies, seeks normalcy, judges himself harshly and possesses low self-esteem (Geringer Woititz). To illustrate, compulsive lying has become a survival tactic and a personality trait for Huck. He thinks of himself as “bad” and feels that he is a bad person for not living up to societal expectations. But, as far as lacking a conscience goes, he has fallen short of that expectation when it comes to people he cares for. For example, Huck plays a trick on Jim and quickly apologizes for making Jim worry about him, despite it being uncouth to humble himself to a n*gger. The bad habits Huck has acquired due to his upbringing are trivial at best. Despite being the child of an alcoholic, he has become a functioning person with morals and near-normal brain development. If Huck is willing and determined to fix his bad habits, he could very well have a bright future ahead of him. Since Pap has died, Huck is finally free to truly live how he

To begin, Pap Finn is the embodiment of the defects within modern civilization; the purpose of his presence is to provide stark juxtaposition from the good in Huck’s life. Pap is a horrendous excuse for a father, Huck cites that he “hadn’t been seen for more than a year, and that was comfortable for [Huck]” (Twain 22). No child should be satisfied with the absence of their parent. The fact that Huck is, raises a red flag for the reader; it indicates neglect and abuse. Pap was also a thief,…

Later all their tricks led to their demise when they are tarred and feathered making Huck realize that it’s better to follow the law and instead of feeling a sense of justice, he feels pity on them because he realizes how cruel people are to each other. When Huck lies, it’s a little more acceptable because he’s still young, naïve, and doesn’t really know any better. When he lied and tricked people, most of them were to protect Jim so he wouldn’t be caught and try to get him to the North, but it later becomes more apparent that Huck didn’t want to go back home, to pap or Miss Watson and the Widow Douglas because he was tired of his dad using him to get his money and the restrictions The Widow and Watson had on him. Even though at first he thought following the Duke and Dauphin’s footsteps, he finally realizes after deceiving the Wilks family that “at last, [he was] a-going to chance it; [he’d] up and tell the truth [that] time”(182). From the beginning of the novel, one can observe the inner strength of young Huck. Huck was a "beaten and bruised" child, coming from a family where the only guidance that the boy had was from his drunken Pap (Dynos 13). Due to a lack of leadership to follow in, Huck was forced to raise himself. It takes a strong character to raise oneself (18), and Huck did one hell of a job doing it. In the beginning of the novel there’s talk that Huck’s father, Pap, is back and as Huck is walking up to the house he notices boot prints near the house. In one of the heels he notices the all too familiar, two crossed nails, and instantly knows his father is there. The first thing Huck does when he sees this is goes to the judge and gives him all his money. He does this knowing that the first thing that his father is going to be asking him for is all the money he has. When Huck shows up in his room later that night right after he shuts the door he turns around and sees his Pap sitting here. “I used to be scared of him all the time, he tanned me so much. I reckoned I was scared now too…”(Twain Pg. 18) First off one can see that Pap isn’t the best “dad” in the world if his own son used to be terrified of him because of the beatings he is used to receiving. Then after sitting here just staring at each other Pap begins nagging him about his “nice clothes” and how Huck obviously thinks he’s better than his Pap. “You’ve put on considerable many frills since…
