Hsm 542 You Decide Week 4
As the CFO of Marysville General Hospital, I realize we have a serious accounts receivable problem here. It has gotten out of control, and we are going to get it back in control. All it takes is a little effort from everyone to get us back on here. With the process improvement plan I am proposing, I will need the assistance and cooperation of the medical staff, the clinical departments, the business office, health information management, and all other departments.
To propose my plan of improving the current situation of the hospital, I will need to get a current report on all past, current and future collection data from the finance department to determine how much we are actually losing at this point. I need to collect the admissions and registration information from the business office. I also need electronic medical records information from health information management. I need a current report on charge captures from the nursing staff. I need a current report on the status of claims processing, payment posting, and secondary billing/patient follow-up.

With verification of all information, we should see a more smooth billing process and the correct plan codes being applied to the various

Many medical organizations with average patient accounts receivable that are greater than a specified amount, not including the allowance, must compute and record an Allowance for Doubtful Accounts on their balance sheet. This accounts receivable balance should be re-evaluated on an annual basis to determine reporting status. Often, it is not known which specific accounts receivable invoices will be uncollectible. An allowance is therefore established to estimate the value of those receivables believed to be uncollectible. This entry should be “recorded so the income statement and balance sheet are fairly stated at the amount expected to be collected in receivables, thus satisfying the matching principle. The entry creates a contra accounts receivable balance. When netted against the gross total of accounts receivable, the true value of the receivables is reported” (FMS,…

Nightingale Hospital’s mission is to strive for healthcare excellence. As such, it is imperative for us to work to address any deficiencies found on our state audits. As always, our goal is for 100% compliance in all survey areas as even a 1% deficiency brings the potential for patient injury or death and for increased hospital operating costs. On our last Joint Commission survey, four priority focus areas were identified: information management, medication management, communication and infection control. In order to address any deficiencies in each of these areas and in preparation for our next Joint Commission audit in a year’s time, each of these focus areas will be discussed in an individual brief and a corrective action plan will be implemented for each deficiency.…

Collection, analyzing, and interpretation of data are important functions at the skilled facility. The nurses are major contributors of data that is either, generated electronically or by the health record department staff. Health care provision today is centered on evidence-based care, which continues to influence the type of care patients receive. Statistical information enables the health care providers to plan, formulate current and future policies, improve patient care through evidence-based studies, evaluate, and improve on customer care, and for compliance purposes. Examples of data collected on daily basis are the daily patient census that summarizes the total number of patients per unit by the end of the day computed manually at 12 midnight. This reporting tool is presented in tabular format and shows all new admissions, readmissions, in-house transfers, transfers out to other levels of care, discharges, deaths, or missing patients. Another example of statistical…
