How would you want your audience to respond to Mrs Farley’s disgrace? Explain how you would perform the role in Act Two, Scenes Two and Four in order to achieve your aims. In Act Two, Scene Two, as an actress I would enter as Mrs Farley at a brisk walk, to hide the fact that I’m in a hurry to get my laces tied, but to show that it is important that my laces are tied tightly. I would also have my blanket wrapped around my stomach to hide my small, but still noticeable bump. I wouldn’t differ my posture from any other time, and I certainly wouldn’t lean over or touch my belly because I wouldn’t want any attention to be drawn to it from the audience or the other actress’ on stage. This would then make the audience intrigued about the pressing issues, and they should then feel almost concerned for Mrs Farley as something seems to be clearly wrong. When I then say my first line, ‘My laces Doll. You’ve got to do my laces. I’m late.’ I would turn myself so I’m almost facing USC, but so that I can still turn my head around so the audience can see my face when I converse with Doll. I would deliver my line hurriedly to show urgency, and I would start by saying my line low in volume but getting gradually louder as I finish it. At this point, Doll will be CR and I will be beside her with my head turned toward her while saying this. Because my audience can’t see my stomach and can only really hear me deliver my line, they will then have no choice but to start making assumptions about Mrs Farley’s disgrace, which keeps them listening and watching intently for further information. When I then say ‘Pull ‘em tight, Doll’ I cup my belly, thinking that nobody will be able to see as I’m facing away from the audience and Doll, but I would also look down at my stomach to draw some attention to the fact my urgency was to do with my disgrace of being pregnant as an actress, without a husband.
