How toys affect a 3 year olds PIES
PHYSICAL- The kitchen toy involves the child to develop a large range of physical development and improvement. Firstly, the whole point of the role play toys is to touch and interact with the things provided. In this case, the kitchen has food items, cupboards and buttons that the child can touch, therefore stimulating one of the senses (touch). Also, there are sounds and noises that play whilst the child is interacting with the toy, this also stimulates the sense of hearing as they recognise and remember the sounds. Secondly, the child has to move around the toy to complete different tasks such as ‘laying down the cutlery and plates for tea’ or ‘putting the food into the oven’. Whilst doing these tasks, they are either walking, running or bending down which means they are physically active. The more excited and playful the child is, the more active they will be when using the toy, meaning they will be doing a lot of physical activity.
INTELLECTUAL/COGNITIVE- The kitchen and table toy is mostly about the child’s intellectual ability and how they use it to create fun games or imaginary scenarios. This is all done through their imagination and creativity. They create characters and scenes where they can use the toy to help them, for example ‘being the mum cooking the dinner for her family’. This helps their cognitive skills as they put themselves into other people’s perspectives and can act this out how they choose. The child has probably experienced being in the kitchen a lot in their normal everyday lives, and watches their other family members in there. This could mean it is easier for them to create things to act out when playing with the toy, as they will use things that they pick up and remember. Also, when using the toy, they are very curious and like to discover what the toy can do and what the props can be used for.
EMOTIONAL- When playing with the kitchen and table toy, the child can become more cooperative and mature as they are thinking about others feelings and thoughts, especially if playing with more than one person. He/she learns that when acting and interacting with others and the toy, you have to take into consideration how you treat others and how they treat you. They will learn how to play fairly and how they are when deciding characters. For example, whether they will let someone else choose their characters for them, or they will stand forward and be more confident in choosing their own made-up person.
SOCIAL- Social development is a major thing for children when playing with a role-play toy, because it involves a lot of cooperation and involvement with other children and adults. They learn to take turns in being a certain role, sharing the props attached and unattached from the toy (cutlery and the oven) and how to talk and act with other people. When acting and playing around, they have to share responsibilities in what they are doing, and consider how to act around that person. Most three year olds like to be in control and the main characters, but they have to learn that this isn’t always the case and taking things in turns will be a big thing to learn.
