There are many ways in which war affects children and young people. It affects every aspect of their being from physical to psychological. Many children die or become very ill as a result of the physical effects of war. This is due to hospitals and health centres being destroyed and doctors and medical staff being killed or fleeing. Children are most vulnerable to diseases like diarrhoea, malaria and cholera. War has a huge impact on children’s education as war destroys industries and jobs. Parents may be forced to keep their children at home to look after their siblings whilst they go out to work forcing the children out of the education system. An education is the best way out of poverty and therefore is imperative for the development of children and young people. Children and young people suffer psychologically from war as they don’t really have an understanding of what is happening and why. It can affect their ability to establish healthy relationships with their peers or adults. Many children or young people turn to alcohol or drug misuse as a coping mechanism for the way they are feeling. They may have lost a family member or…

Villages are sometimes forced to sacrifice children to rebel groups in order to not be attacked. In another part of Mogadishu, “Children load bullets twice the size of their fingers”(Gettleman). These children have been doing this all there lives, they practically make up the communities. In this case, “In neighborhoods by the sea, [children] run checkpoints and stop four by four trucks” (Gettleman). Not only this but they are tortured, and treated like slaves for the rest of their lives. Even if they try to escape they will most likely be shot, but if they do end up escaping they will just end up being taken by someone else.…

Ranging from ages of 8 to 15, child soldiers are raped, abused, and sometimes even sent on suicide missions if they haven't died from the hardship put on a child in the military. 40% of child soldiers are recruited by force and many times forced to kill their family so that they don't have anything to come back to if they escape from the military. Although many countries still practice the recruiting of children, I believe stopping this practice will cause benefits to society, child soldiers lives, and quality of the protection of the country that stops this practice.…
