Every one communicates in unique ways, often saying the same idea in a totally different way, using their own personal viewpoints this is clear after reading “When I Woke up Tuesday Morning, It was Friday” by Martha Stout, I realized she had the same opinion as Juhani Pallasmaa and Oliver Sacks. All three of them believe that in order to get the most out of life people must try to take in as much of their environment as possible, through their five senses. This thought was central to all of their articles, however none of them just come out and say it; they use examples to help the reader understand, and each one…

David Foster Wallace’s “Consider the Lobster” is an in-depth 2004 article about the annual Maine Lobster Festival. The event is held every July in an area of Maine known as the mid-coast, which Wallace describes as, “…from Owl’s Head and Thomaston in the south, to Belfast in the north” (Wallace.2004). Throughout the narrative, Wallace deftly uses concrete language to bring the reader into the tents at the festival, Styrofoam plate in hand along with him. When describing the fare on offer for instance, Wallace talks about the soft drinks being “iceless and flat” and describes the coffee as “convenience store coffee”. Apart from being fairly humorous, these descriptions help the reader immerse themselves in the narrative. We’ve all had awful and overpriced meals at county fairs and so when we read Wallace’s description, we know exactly what he is talking about. Wallace’s overall take on the festival is that it is a slice of a vanishing Americana, but perhaps it is one that should be relegated to the past. Festivals like the one Wallace attended used to be much more commonplace as a way for areas of the country to celebrate regional interests which may seem unworthy of celebration in other areas. Although enjoyed and heartily endorsed by most locals Wallace says, several national groups, including PETA have been campaigning against the festival on the grounds of animal cruelty sine the 1990’s. The local opinion is characterized most succinctly by Dick, who Wallace introduces as “our florid and extremely gregarious rental car guy”, who says when asked if boiling lobsters alive is tantamount to animal cruelty, “There’s a part of the brain in people and animals that lets us feel pain and lobster’s brains don’t have that part”(2004. page 5). Wallace explains to the reader that Dick’s opinion is wrong on a scientific level, and in doing so conveys the general mood of…

I have witnessed the stages of conflict in my relationships on a daily basis, especially when it comes to my sixteen year old daughter and her attitude, we often disagree. Our greatest challenge that we deal with the most is trying to manage her diabetes in public. Lately she has gained this attitude of she knows what is best for her. She wants to be independent and thinks that she does not need my guidance or opinion. Often times, this cause a power struggle between the child and the parent. In reality, she does not see a problem with her managing it alone. In the past, allowing her to self-manage her diabetes caused an increase in her A1-C. We resolved the problem by coming to a verbal agreement. I came up with a plan that would allow me to be trusting and for her to feel independent. The idea is for her to check her blood sugar levels with her testing kit and every Thursday we will get together and review the numbers. She had to agree with sitting down and discussing any changes that needs to be made without conflict. We both have agreed to meet one another half way and work together to ensure her health as a team.…

The bus ride to Muscle Shoals High School felt like hours and hours while only minutes had passed. My stomach flipped ferociously like a gymnast on the vault. My friends were trying to hype me up, but I could only focus on the fear and shaking of my body. I was too afraid to move, but too prideful to act as though I was as nervous as I was. As my legs carried me onto the huge field where vibrant reds and blacks were flaunted over the walls and seats, I observed the very place I would spill all my hardwork and dedication and I began to grow anxious. “Just breathe” I told myself over and over and over. I was so busy arguing with myself that I barely noticed the loudspeaker singing my name. I walked to the field and slowly crouched like a lioness hunting her prey. POW. The gun went off and everything became normal to me. Running had become like breathing or eating or sleeping. I no longer feared the idea of failure, but yet embraced the idea of succeeding. I bolted across the finish line with many seconds between me and my opponents. Not only did I win the war within myself, but I helped my team win the entire meet. Everyone can win their battles, you just have to have the will and determination to do…

Nursing has always been a passion for me, something about the gratification from helping others regain optimal functionality is refreshing. I witnessed this feeling years ago when I had to honored of assisting my grandmother with her post care after having a triple bypass in 2003. Those moments of appreciation she showed me were priceless. In the next five years my nursing role will probably increase exponentially due to the increasing aging of the American population, which will result in an increased number of individuals needing medical assistance in their elderly years. In addition, my nursing role will expand and or increase due to the fact that the nursing shortage is predicted to continue to grow for the next 10 years or more if not curtailed, which will place increasing responsibility on nurses to administer to the needs of more patients, as well as to assume the management role of supervising newer nursing staff. In addition, an increasing number of patients will place more burden on the limited number of doctors that are available, which will require that nurses assume an increasing role in assisting physicians in carrying out treatment procedures.…

It was my first day of practice for high school swimming. There I was- a scrawny freshman, idolizing these upperclassmen who towered above me. Being the only freshman in my class, my coach had me train alongside these giants. I remember the countless morning practices, which always involved grueling endurance sets, where my teammates lapped me constantly while I struggled to make the intervals; feeling disappointed in myself, but determined to continue working hard in order to catch up to my teammates. However, even those grueling workouts could not compare to Christmas break that year. A whole week of practices that were near impossible for my teammates, and absolute torture for me. I will never forget one set from that week. It was a set of 32x150s with a descending interval every four. By the last eight, I was no longer making the interval and struggling to keep up with my teammates, who ended up lapping me, as usual. But I still put every ounce of effort I had into that set, and swam every lap long after everyone else had finished. I challenged myself with a fierce determination to…
