How To Reduce Gun Violence In America

Gun violence has impacted so many communities across the country. Gun violence is one of the top ten causes of death in the United States. During the past decade in America more than 100,000 people have been killed due to gun violence. Close to half a million more people have fallen victim to assaults, robberies, mass shootings and other crimes that involved a gun. These tragedies were committed by criminals who should’ve never had access to a gun in the first place. In order to reduce gun violence we need to start by reforming legislation, improving the mental and physical health of citizens in need, efficient and effective background checks including how and what is reported, keeping track of what guns are sold, lost, or stolen and smart and effective enforcement of our gun laws.
We need to reduce gun violence by expanding background checks and building on the significant foundation those before us already built. The current Federal Gun Laws under the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act state, “ You cannot have a gun for personal or business use if you were convicted of a crime punishable by being in prison for more than one year, are a fugitive from justice, are addicted to, or illegally use, any controlled substance, have been ruled mentally defective by a court, or are committed to a mental institution, are an illegal alien living in the United States unlawfully, received a dishonorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces, renounced your U.S. citizenship, if you are a U.S. citizen or are subject to a court restraining order that involves your 'intimate partner”. State gun laws vary depending on the state.
