The purposes of this lab include learning how to measure the pH of several different liquids as well as learning how to change the pH of those liquids by adding other acidic and alkaline mixtures.
Materials:
Graduated cylinder- used to measure the various liquids
4 100 mL beakers- used to hold liquids when measuring pH pH meter- used to measure the pH of the various liquids
Tap water- liquid we are trying to find pH of
Distilled water- liquid we are trying to find pH of
Soda- liquid we are trying to find pH of
Milk- liquid we are trying to find pH of
Lemon juice- added to distilled water
Rolaid antacid tablet- crushed up then added to distilled water
Hammer- used to crush up Rolaid tablet
Mixer- used to mix liquids
Method: 1. Measure 50 mL tap water using the graduated cylinder then add it to one of the beakers 2. Measure 50 mL of soda using the graduated cylinder and add it to a clean beaker 3. After rinsing graduated cylinder measure 50 mL of milk and add it to a clean beaker 4. After rinsing graduated cylinder measure 10 mL lemon juice and add that to 40 mL of distilled water. Then pour this solution into the final clean beaker 5. Measure and record pH of the liquids one at a time. Be sure to rinse pH meter after each use. Move pH meter around in beaker to get more accurate results. 6. Crush up one Rolaid tablet using the hammer and mix this with the beaker of 50 mL distilled water. Record the pH 7. Using the graduated cylinder, measure out 10 mL of the Rolaid mixture and add this to the beaker of soda. Mix together with the mixer and record the pH 8. Add 10 mL more of the Rolaid mixture to the beaker of soda. Mix and record pH 9. Add a final 10 mL of the Rolaid solution to the beaker of soda. Mix and record pH 10. After rinsing the graduated cylinder, measure 10 mL of the diluted lemon juice and add this to the beaker of milk. Mix together and record the pH while also noting any changes in
