I want to thank my editor, Bruce Shostak, without whose skill and patience much of this book would have been intelligible only to others who’ve had a blinding passion for foreign languages since 1944. I further thank my publisher, Steven Schragis, for venturing into publishing territory heretofore officially listed as “uninteresting”. Dr. Henry Urbanski, Founder and Head of the New Paltz Language Immersion Institute, was good enough to review key portions of the manuscript and offer toweringly helpful amendments. Dr. Urbanski’s associate, Dr. Hans Weber, was supremely helpful in safeguarding against error. I further wish to thank all my fellow language lovers from around the world who interrupted their conversations at practice parties of the Language Club to serve as willing guinea pigs for my questions and experimentations in their native languages.

Learning more than one linguistic system is a challenge and when teaching the mother language at home is its only exposure, it becomes harder to develop those multilingual skills. With the difficulties that come with learning two languages, some children give up learning one, usually the native tongue and with advancing languages such as English in the business and political world, children might not even learn their cultural language at home. Just as quickly as these dominant languages have been growing,…

I started learning English when I was in elementary school, at which time English for children was taught through songs, stories, and games. The joy of understanding a different language other than my own was beyond compare, which started to pique my interest in linguistics. High school came when I decided to challenge myself with a completely new foreign language, and my choice was French. Merely one semester into studying French, I found myself extremely lucky having chosen this language as it shared multiple similarities with English. However, even until today, my English and French learning journeys have never been exactly alike. After ten years of studying English and three years of studying French, I contend three main differences between learning these two languages.…

With reference to the educational system it is demanded that two other languages should be learned in schools under the heading of the ‘life-long language learning’ programme. Although today’s countries are already coined by bilingualism and multilingualism the development and maintenance of different languages is still emotionally debated within politics and societies (cf. Meisel 2004:1). This is especially the case in child language acquisition because it is assumed that different language input could negatively influence the cognitive mechanisms and that the children could be trapped between two or more unsteady developed languages. Referring to the situation of children with a migrant background the arguments on the one hand claim that the maintenance of the family language is threatened and on the other hand that the proficiency of the majority language is insufficient to interact within the environment and to proceed academically (cf. ibid.). Recalling the European Commission it is stated that because of the globalisation the knowledge of more than one language is seen as a basic skill and the competence to communicate in languages apart from English takes on an important role. Since children with a migrant background are usually raised with…

    Foreign Languages

A foreign language is a language indigenous to another country. It is also a language not spoken in the native country of the person referred to, i.e. an English speaker living in Japan can say that Japanese is a foreign language to him or her. These two characterisations do not exhaust the possible definitions, however, and the label is occasionally applied in ways that are variously misleading or factually inaccurate.…
