Research Methods

Research is what I’m doing when I don’t know what I’m doing.
Werner von Braun

Research
• Knowing things
• How do you know?
• Direct Experience – through observation
(Methodology)
• Agreement reality (those things we “know” as part of the culture we share with those around us) and experiential reality.

Human Inquiry
1) All people exhibit a desire to predict their circumstances. a. Getting an education will affect how much money we earn later in life

Errors in Human Inquiry

Inaccurate observations
Overgeneralization
Selective observation
Illogical reasoning

Example of research questions
• Do women earns less money than men and, if so, why? • What distinguishes juvenile gangs of different ethnic groups? • Which major your college offer the broadest degree of foreign service training?
• What are the functions of Filipino family and how those have been changing over time?

A PROBLEM IS SOLVABLE IF,

EMPIRICALLY TEST ITS
TENTATIVE SOLUTION

UNSOLVABLE PROBLEMS

UNSTRUCTURED PROBLEM
LACK OF DATA
VICIOUS CIRCULARITY
IMPASSE PROBLEMS
