1.1) In my setting, establishing a respectable, professional relationship with the children is very important, as it will give you the attention and respect you require, when you require it. There are important skills you need to be able to build this relationship. Patience is a key skill needed when working with children. Some children can work at slower levels than other children, which may lead them to become frustrated with themselves or the situation. If the child is attempting to explain their work to you, then you must take your time in listening to them because if you begin to interrupt, then this may cause the child to become aggravated and frustrated. Learn to be patient and listen to them until they have finished telling you what they want to tell you. Another important attribute is always give a smile when you see a child. If you show the child that you are friendly and approachable, then you will instantly create a good relationship with the child, which can then be built on. If you appear angry and unfriendly, then the child will try to avoid any contact with you or will just stay quiet when you ask them a question. Linked into this attribute would be humour. Children love laughter and it can also help increase their attention span during lessons, as the children will be concentrating on what you say, just in case you say something funny. Building a good relationship with the children also has a serious side as they will begin to feel comfortable coming to you if they have any problems. It could be from issues with their school work, to something more serious and personal. In situations like this, you must be able to empathise with the child. Show them that you understand their issue by repeating what they have told you and ask them what they would like you to do. This will allow the child to tell you what they would like to happen, therefore building a respectful relationship between you and the child.…

Members of teaching staff demonstrate expected behaviour in many ways throughout school. Initially the presentation and personality of the members of staff is a primary method of setting a good example. Teachers and teaching assistants should dress appropriately for work, wearing smart clothing yet clothes that can cope with the demands of the working day (e.g. ties that clip on/off to prevent strangulation if pulled, clothing that isn’t too tight/restrictive). Teachers and TA’s should speak to other members of staff, young people and children in an appropriate manner, as well as using appropriate tone, volume, spoken words and body language. Members of staff should be setting examples for children to follow, as you are the professionals in which the children and young people look up to, and look for, for guidance and support through their school lives.…

Ensuring the child’s welfare and safety is important we make sure they are safe by carrying out risk assessments and stopping children swinging on their chairs and running with scissors. We do this because if a child falls when they have the scissors they could be badly injured aswell as the swinging on chairs or someone else could get hurt. Using physical punishment is wrong because the child will grow up thinking violence is acceptable and use it themselves. Instead of physical punishment use strategies such as time out because there are plenty of ways to teach children what is wrong and right. Showing compassion is important the child needs to feel that they can come to you with a problem and if you are not sensitive and compassionate they will not feel like they can confide in you. This is important because when a child is upset they need someone to come and talk to and they will go to the person who is compassionate. Respecting a child’s confidentiality is important because they have a right to it. If a child comes to you with a small issue then you can talk them through it but if it is a major issue for example bullying or abuse then tell the child’s teacher. In the setting you should provide a safe environment that facilitates independence in learning.…
