COMMON BAD HABITS
We all know that nobody is perfect. We all have some sort of bad habit. There are bad habits that we are aware of and then there are some that we ourselves do not notice. Bad habits affect everybody around us at some point. Taking the first unselfish act of realizing that you have a bad habit and taking the steps to break it will improve your life tremendously. Some of the more common bad habits are knuckle cracking, cigarette smoking, nail biting, gossiping, overeating, or lying just to name a few. Of course for those who choose to break yourself from your bad habit it will not be easy and definitely test one's amount of will power and determination. So if you're ready for a challenge, don't mind a commitment, and want to break that bad habit just follow the steps below.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR BAD HABIT
First step is to realize and understand that you do have a bad habit. Ask yourself the following questions and write down your answers:
What is my bad habit?
How bad is it?
Why do I do it?
How is it affecting me and the ones around me?
What are the negative repercussions of my habit?
KEEP A JOURNAL OF YOUR HABIT
Second step is a self-analysis of you. Start a journal of your habit. Make the first entry from your answers from the above questions. You will be keeping notes on your thoughts and emotions throughout the process of breaking your habit. Every time you're habitual behavior _takes over_ you'll keep record of it thus forcing yourself to remember. This helps you to face your actions on an everyday basis.
DECIDING ON HOW TO BREAK YOUR HABIT
The next step is choosing an alternative method or behavior for the habit. Habits are basically us fulfilling a need we have so if quitting "_cold turkey_" is out of the question, try to seek an alternative method to meeting the same need. For example, if you're an over-eater, you probably eat more when you experience some emotional pain. You might try talking about your feelings to someone or write about them in a journal. For nail biters, who need to calm themselves down from time to time, you might take up a yoga class or just go for a walk when feeling anxiety.
BUILD YOURSELF A "NO" ZONE
Discover who in your life disapproves of your habit. Then tell yourself when you are around that person(s) you will not indulge in the act of your habit. Basically you will be using this person as an anchor. This method works best with someone you love to be around. Just go around them whenever you feel the like controlling the urge for your habit. I you care a lot for this person you will find yourself having a lesser desire for your habit. Now this doesn't mean you can't go around them at times you choose to do your undesired habit, it's just more of a reason to help you quit.
REPLACE THE BAD WITH THE GOOD
Next step to try is to focus on the positive reasons instead of the negative ones. For example, don't look at it as missing out on that sweet...
