Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, evil enters the fictitious world of Narnia and quickly diffuses throughout the land. This evil permeates every aspect of its society and has its inhabitants living in fear of the source: Jadis, “Queen” of Narnia, better known as the White Witch. She is this evil that has infiltrated Narnia through her villainous origins, dastard objectives, destructive instruments, and corrupt characteristics…

Heroes are brave. They put their life on the line to save others. An example of this happened on December 3 when state trooper Michael J. Miles saved an unnamed 3 year old boy from his abductor, Michael Ramirez, who had taken him from his home. After Ramirez escaped the police's tail on him, he ran into the North Carolina forest where “Miles used his knowledge of the area to… approach him on foot” (Hero Trooper Saves 3 Year Old After Amber Alert 1). That is bravery. He put his fears aside so he could save a little boy because he knew that by the time people would come to help it could be too late. Without Miles’ bravery, that little boy might not be alive. Bravery, however, is not the only important quality of a hero.…

Beowulf demonstrated this by setting out to fight the great terror, Grendel, while Nelson showed this by standing against the government which was abusing the human rights of black people simply because of their skin color. With Beowulf going to slay Grendel, we should keep in mind that he volunteered to sail to another country to fight him, even though Grendel was not an eminent threat to Beowulf and his country. The extent he went to kill a monster that was not affecting him or anyone he knew before going there shows how good natured and self sacrificing he is, all for the greater good. “_________________________” Blahblahblahcblahcblhablahnlahblhablah. With Nelson Mandela, he led the country of South Africa out of the pro-apartheid government so that he and all other black people living in South Africa could live in a safe environment. “I learned courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.” Nelson wanted to stand up for whta he believed in, but eas held back at first by fear. He learned to overcome the fearand built up the courage to fight for the rights of black people, so that every black person could walk freely. This demonstrates how selfless he is because there are and were many risks that came with going against the government as a minority, and he got sent away for almost 30 years so that a whole race could have more…

Another character in the novel that demonstrated bravery was Dolphus Raymond. He was brave because he let everyone know that he loves an African American when it wasn’t right in other peoples’ eyes. He says, “They could never, never understand that I live like I do because that’s the way I want to live.” (pg. 268) The reason why he lives this way is because he prefers African Americans. Dolphus Raymond even has mixed children with his wife. Another reason why he is brave is because he has a different mindset speaking as a white man; he believes that white people give hell to black people and that it is wrong.…

Felix Adler describes a hero as someone “who kindles a great light in the world, who sets up blazing torches in the dark streets of life for men to see by”, emphasizing that a hero puts others before themselves, as well as doing everything in their power to contribute to the greater good. An important concept in literary works, heroes place an emphasis on helping others. Often a protagonist, a hero fights to keep the common good, going against evil or the antagonist. This concept has not faded over time as heroes continue to play an important role in many people's lives, as insignificant as Spider-man may seem, he spends his time helping others. However, not all literary works must have a character that fits Felix Adler’s definition of a hero. Many works lack a character, even the protagonist, who fits Felix Adler's description of a hero and therefore may not have a hero.…
