How Oregon Has Changed My Life
In my life I have traveled and experienced many opportunities that most people my age haven’t. I have had many diverse experiences that some people may not have had. Being born in Portland Oregon has really played a part in my diverse life. Oregon has changed from when I was born in 1996, but for the most part for the better. It has shaped my life into the person I am today and how I view the world and the people in it. In this paper I will go through some experiences that I have had from birth to my present day life. Starting with the area that I was born in and how that affected me at a young age. After that I will explain some of my elementary years and how I was immersed in a Hispanic and Latino environment. Around my middle school years is when I …show more content…
Middle school is a weird time for any student. For me, this is where I started to find my political views and how I was so much different from my peers. Oregon is a very Democratic state, while I found myself leaning towards Republican views. I knew more than most people my age about politics and sometimes it surprised my teachers. The middle school I went to was actually back in Canby so both of the Elementary Schools that I had attended went to the same middle school. This was an interesting dynamic considering I was seeing Hispanics, Latino, African Americans, Asian Americans, the working class and the upper class. Political views were an emerging subject because of the 2008 election of Barack Obama. I did not like him at all and my friends, and teacher knew. Most people would call me raciest because they thought I disliked him because of the color of his skin. This was hard because nobody would let me talk and explain my reasons. This was diverse considering I was in an environment with different points of views on this matter. In this environment it was hard. I felt like an outcast with people that I had been around for almost my entire

The manner in which an immigrant is described largely depends upon the time period and the national origin of said immigrant. The manner in which Latinx populations are characterized can be described as “The Latino Threat.” The Latino threat narrative asserts that Latinx immigrants are a threat to American culture, creed, and identity. This narrative claims that this threat stems from non-assimilation into the existing American culture (Chavez, 24).…

This week's readings involved introductions to problems faced by the Chicano community. It depicts how far back these cultural problems have arose and how the community continues to struggle and overcome it. For example, in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, it is a historical document stating peace, friendship, limits, and settlement for the people of Mexico and the United States. This treaty was drafted in 1848, which ended the Mexican-American War, in hopes for a better relationship between the two countries. In contrast, in the poem, I am Joaquin, the poet brings light how the treaty is broken and how the Chicano people and all people represented in the poem are oppressed socially, economically, culturally, and politically, by the "Gabachos".…

Se Habla Espanol by Tanya Barrientos was about a Latina girl who struggled with her identity. She was born in Guatemala but has lived in America since she was three years old. In the beginning she was somewhat embarrassed by her Hispanic heritage. Tanya felt inferior to the white people because of how she looked and because of her last name. The tone of the essay was a serious and desperate cry for help. It seemed she was speaking to anyone who could listen and relate to her. Tanya wrote from her point of view and how she felt like a “gringa” trapped in a Latina girl’s body.…

Although I have lived in Ohio for the past ten years and have been molded by the experiences I have had in the small town of Mount Vernon, I can still fondly remember everything about where I was born and raised. I was born on May 29th, 1998 in the small town of Irving, Texas. Growing up in Texas gave me a concept of how big this world truly is, with the seemingly endless drives to visit family members across state or the incomprehensible size of the Dallas skyline. Visiting my aunts in Texas and living with my grandmother during the first months of my living in Ohio taught me valuable life lessons and morals that I carry with me to this day.…

An anonymous author wrote “Our culture, our traditions, our language are the foundations upon which we build our identity.” This brings out what Tanya Maria Barrientos argues throughout her essay, “Se Habla Español.” She struggled to identify herself as Latino and embracing her Spanish heritage. So at a young age, she decided to step away from America’s stereotypical view of Latin’s and embrace what she thought was the correct way to live. One main thing she didn’t want was to be able to speak Spanish, because she thought people would automatically judge her. Like Barrientos, I how was raised had a lot to do with my identity and how I perceived myself and the world.…

It wasn’t until my mother moved me to a school in Manhattan for my last two years of elementary school that I really embraced my Hispanic culture. In this school, there was a diverse population where everyone was encouraged to accept their differences. There were a lot of other mixed children as well. There were events and concerts that celebrate important historical figures of our cultures and days devoted to learning about the history of different cultures. For example, there were family nights, events where you would bring in your family and interact with the different people around you to really get to know your peers and the backgrounds that they come from. This was very important to me because it opened me up and exposed me to the diversity in the world. This foundation allowed me to express the different aspects of my culture; it doesn’t matter who is around me, but who I am on the…
