For example, Jim shows plenty of bravery by choosing to run away from his master, and he also protects Huck from knowing about his dead father by saying, “Come in, Huck, but doan’ look at his face—it’s too gashly.” By protecting Huck from the truth, Jim shows himself as a hero, and he shows that he cares for Huck. Soon, Jim became like a father to Huck, and he went through a similar hero's journey while escaping slavery literally, and also by escaping from the slavery of society. In addition, Huck rescues Jim from slave hunters by telling them, “pap’s got the small-pox”. Because of Huck’s sharp wit, he and Jim weren’t caught by the hunters, and they even got some extra money because of it. Surprisingly though, Huck didn’t have to do any this, and in fact, it would have been easier for him to just turn Jim in, but he didn’t, and this continues his streak of heroism. Furthermore, Huck also became a hero when he chose to rip up the letter to Mrs. Watson, and by saying, “All right, then, I’ll go to hell”. Huck decided in that moment that he would not conform any longer to society’s demands if it meant that he’d have to send his friend back into slavery. Because of his hero’s journey down the river, Huck had risen above the chaos and hypocrisy of the world. Huck had found his identity in his own self determined values, while Jim had finally gained his freedom in the end, and this was the perfect ending to a hero’s…

Mark Twain displays the good in humanity through depictions of courage in the characters of Huckleberry Finn and Jim. Huck Finn, certainly one of the bravest characters in the novel, overcomes his hardships through his demonstration of courage. One example of his courage occurs upon a crashed steamboat, “The Walter Scott”, when Huck stumbles upon a ruthless band of cutthroats and attempts to stop them. Huck says, “if we find their boat we can put all of ‘em in a bad fix-for the Sheriff ‘ll get ‘em” (Twain 90). Huck demonstrates his fearlessness to risk his own life to bring several murderous criminals to justice. He displays the human virtue of heroism when he decides to free Jim from the clutches of the Phelps family. Although he thought it would cost him his life, Huck summons up the courage to help free Jim. To many, Huck Finn’s demonstration of courage may in fact personify their connotation of courage, however, to others it may only display bravery.…

Heroes aren’t brave because they have no fear, but because they are willing to overcome that fear. The denotation of courage is ‘the ability to do something that frightens one.’ A hero doesn’t display courage if he isn’t fearful of his circumstances or the actions he must take. The triumph over fear, overcoming something hard, dangerous, or frightening, is what shows bravery. Willingly going against fear-no matter how big it is-to rescue, save, or bring justice, is heroic. The former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, once said, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” A cowardice may seem to have the simple way out, being subject to backing out and not having to face difficult situations, however, the act of bravery bears more fruit in character. While a coward reaps nothing more than a failure mentality, a hero-someone brave- overcomes fear and grows a mentality of endurance. After shying away from trials, a coward sees that he can’t do strenuous work (or won’t) and doesn’t try again, but a brave man sees that he can overcome hard things and is encouraged to jump over more hurdles.…
