How Is There Tension In A Raisin In The Sun

A Raisin in the Sun is a very interesting play about a struggling black family in the 1900’s who just lost an important member of their family. When Walter Sr. passed away he had a 10,000 dollar life insurance policy that was left to his family. During this play the family has to figure out where and what to do with the money. Each of the characters in this play A Raisin in the Sun, have a different view about what money will do for their lives. Everyone in the play except for a few characters, believe that the money they receive is going to fix more than their money issues its going to fix their entire lives. This family has never seen money like this before and it creates such a stir. They grew up working hard for every dollar they received and have always lived in poverty. Mama: “Son, how come you talk so much ‘bout money?” Walter: “Because, it is life, Mama!” Mama: “Oh—so now its life. Money is life. Once upon a time freedom use to be life—now its money. I guess the world really do change...” Walter: “No—it was always money, Mama. We just didn’t know about it. (Hansberry, p. 1002)” They believe that money is everything, no one can be happy without it. All of the characters have dreams and because their dreams have never been fulfilled it creates a lot of tension and they believe that the money they will be getting
In the beginning of the play he is mean and negative toward everyone in his family. He has a broken relationship with his wife Ruth, his mother Lena, and his sister Beneatha. The only person he really gets along with is his son Travis, and that’s because Walter gives him whatever he wants. Even if it means undermining his mother to make him seem like the good guy. Walter is so frustrated with the way that his life turned out that he remains miserable and takes it out on everyone around
