How Is The American Dream Different In The Great Gatsby

The American Dream is described as the perfect lifestyle. No one wants challenges or problems; they want the ‘perfect life’. This idea is stabilized by the different desires, wants, and needs for each person trying to obtain it; every individual has a different dream but it still can be obtained, as we see from Gatsby and Nick. The people in this country all have different backgrounds, they have come from different situations. The dreams of each of these people are different and the journey to achieve them can be challenging. In The Great Gatsby we are introduced to Gatsby. Gatsby is in the upper class, and he is considered “new money”. In The Great Gatsby the society’s “new money” is people that earn their money and aren’t born with it. Gatsby is thought to have gotten his money from bootlegging, so he got his money illegally. Gatsby is a unique character because his dream is completely different than everyone else in the story. As we see in the story Gatsby said, “Here’s lot of clippings about you.” (Fitzgerald 93);
However, the dream has changed over time. It was different in the twenties because social status was a huge factor just like money. Now money is still a huge factor, but not everyone is effected by social status. The thing that stayed the same was what happens when your dream is achieved. When the dream is achieved it is not a dream anymore it is a reality. A dream is in someones mind so it can be obtained. The Great Gatsby is a great book to show the American Dream. In the twenties, people partied hard, and wasted their money on stuff that was fun. Everyone wants to have fun, and that is what they did in Gatsby. Gatsby and Nick have two different dreams, Nick’s was obtained and Gatsby was close. Not everyone’s dream is the same, but everyone can obtain theirs. Everyones path is different some are difficult, but once you obtain it, it becomes
