It is that voice in your head that is telling you to do things that may not be morally right. This is the perfect description for Jack, who was the most violent boy in the group. He didn’t always follow the rules that were made nor did he do what he was told. Jack did what he thought would be best even if it wasn’t for the good of the group. For example, when it was his turn to keep watch over the fire to make sure it didn’t burn out, he just left because he thought his time would be better spent hunting with some of the other boys. This could be seen as the “devil on his shoulder” telling him to do something that goes against what he should have done. During the time when he left, the fire ended up burning out, along with the chance of the boat that passed by, to see and to possibly help the boys get off the island. They had a conch, which was used to keep order in the group when they had ideas, or needed to say something during a meeting. Jack disregarded the rules of the conch when the boys had a meeting to discuss whether or not they saw a beast and in addition, he also tried to take over and be the groups
