How Is Abigail Williams Untruthful In The Crucible
The Salem witch trials began in 1692 because a group of girls were found dancing in the woods, calling for the devil Salem, Massachusetts. Abigail Williams is one of the young girls who was found dancing in the woods by her uncle, Reverend Parris. Along with her good qualities comes a few certain flaws as well. Abigail gets very jealous when it comes to Elizabeth, spiteful when she has a lot of anger built up and untruthful when it comes to admitting that she danced in the woods. Abigail is a main factor when it comes to the blaming of the events that have happened in Salem, Massachusetts.
Abigail Williams is very jealous of Elizabeth Proctor because she is in love with her husband, John. Abigail and John see each other when he comes to town. Abigail believes that John Proctor did not show up just to see Betty fly. He claims that he came to see what mischief was being brewed up. Then Abigail states, “John- I am waitin’ for you every night” (Miller, 1139). This is proving that she is still in love with him because she waits up every night just to see if he will leave Elizabeth and come home to her. She holds the flaws of jealousy, spitefulness and mendacity. Abigail Williams is intensely jealous of Elizabeth Proctor because she is in love with her husband John Proctor. Abigail would stay up every night just to wait and see if John Proctor would be coming home to her. She also has a lot of anger and hate built up against Elizabeth that she wants to get rid of. By trying to do this she says some pretty harsh words about Elizabeth to her husband in hopes that he would come back to her in the long run. When it came to the situation of dancing in the woods, Abigail was not truthful in the first place but later on then admitted what had really happened. There is not much background information on her, but as far as history goes, Abigail was born 1680 and lived with her Uncle Samuel Parris’ family, who was the head Reverend of Salem, Massachusetts at the time. “Although it was ordinary practice for young girls to live with relatives to learn about housewifery, we know very little about Abigail, including where she was born and who her parents were.” (Yost, 2002) In an indirect way, Abigail has contributed to American history being that she was the main cause of the Salem Witch Trial accusations. The 6th amendment of the American Constitution was highly influenced by the Salem Witch Trials. With the 6th amendment, the accused are entitled to have a witness, an attorney for their defense, and will be heard before a jury in court. The Salem Witch Trials affected the way America viewed reliable evidence used in court cases because they stopped using spectral evidence. During the Witchcraft trials, the only evidence available was hear-say information from the girls who were “afflicted.” More than 45 innocent people were killed, because the court believed Abigail and the girls without looking into further detail about the spoken "witches."     After the Salem Witch trials pick up irreversible speed, Abigail decides to utilize her position to her advantage and drive a wedge between Proctor and his wife once again. Abigail even admits that she has “a heat [for John]” and “looks for the John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart” (Miller 24). Evidently, Abigail still has repressed desires for John. Given that Abigail and John’s affair ended poorly with Abigail fired from her job due to Elizabeth, Abigail not only lusts for John, but also looks to seek revenge on his wife, Elizabeth. In Act II of the play when Elizabeth is anonymously accused of witchcraft, she automatically associates Abigail saying that “[Abigail] wants me dead” and “I knew it all week it would come to this” (Miller 60). Abigail’s lust for John and jealousy of Elizabeth motivated her to lie to achieve her repressed desires. As the accusations keep spreading around the town, even Proctor comes to realization that Abigail “thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave” (110).
