Both stories seem to be set in the same time periods, mid 70’s to early 80’s. The main characters Edie and Sammy seem to be around the same age, Edie-15, “I was fifteen and away from home” (Munro, par 23) and Sammy- around 18. Another similarity with both stories is that the teens are working their summers away, and were very happy working until their love interests show up: Queenie in A&P and Chris Watters in How I Met My Husband. After Edie and Sammy have set their eyes on people who they thought were the loves of their lives, something happens. Sammy is waiting for Queenie, and her girlfriends, to be setting outside, and Edie is waiting for a letter from Chris, or Chis himself to show up. Another similarity in the stories is that someone is criticized. Edie hears an earful when she admits to being “intimate” with Chris and is called “filthy little rags” (Munro 199, par. 177). Queenie and her friends are instructed by Lengel to be “decently dressed” when going to the A&P (Updike 20, par. 16). “A & P” and “How I Met My Husband” have very similar structures and have similar themes. As people age, maturity and wisdom is gained through every experience. From the time a child turns eighteen and becomes an adult, they are required to deal with the realities of the real world and learn how to handle its responsibilities. In John Updike’s short story “A&P” the protagonist Sammy is a young man in 1961 New England who works in the town’s local grocery store. In a matter of a day, Updike goes from an immature boy with unrealistic ideas and fantasies, to a man who is about to realize how life altering the choices he makes can be. Sammy realizes that life isn’t always fair and that sometimes it involves the consequences that life can deal to anyone who has not had time to test a rash decision. Updike’s story illustrates that a part of growing up is a willingness to accept consequences of one’s choices, and that life 's hardest lessons are sometimes learned a little too late.…

Some of the things are that both of the authors talk about the same idea of a young boy’s growth for their adolescences. These boys need a lot more experience with the real world this comes with time, age and also experience. What is it like for Sammy to grow up with his parents and arbay to grow up with his aunt and uncle? In these essays what would you do if you were in the same situation as these boys? How do these boys need to grow up and mature? Or do you think that their actions might be a little overboard…
