Hurricanes can be very powerful and violent storms. Hurricanes get their energy when the sun heats up the ocean water. When the wind blows across the warm ocean, the water evaporates and gets carried upward. As the wind continues, the storm starts to spin and move across the ocean. If the water stays warm there are no mountains or obstacles, the storm can grow. Once it hits land, it no longer has moisture or heat so it starts to weaken.

The wind speed tells you how strong a hurricane is, and stronger storms are much more dangerous! The Safire-Simpson Scale measures a hurricane’s strength. In 2005 Hurricane Wilma reached category five status, but was a category three when it hit the west coast of Florida. Wilma caused

Hurricanes can form very quickly and destroy communities in only a few days. Hurricanes are caused by warm, moist air being present over the ocean. The air rises up near the surface. The warm air rises so there is low pressure below. Air from nearby areas with higher pressure moves to areas with lower pressure. That air turns warm and moist and then rises. The surrounding air takes the place of that air. As the warm air cools, water in the air turns into clouds. The clouds and winds spin and grow, collecting the oceans heat and water from the surface (Erickson and Leon, 2017, p. 1-5). While the storm continues to grow it will reach different stages. At 38 miles per hour it is considered a tropical depression. Tropical depressions then become tropical storms and are given a name. Every six years a list of names is reused. These…

A disaster kit should include water, flashlights, first aid kit, canned food, fire, tool kit, blankets, prescription drugs, cash, and a whistle. The author of Making a disaster supply kit states, “The potential for power loss during a natural disaster is almost certain. Having multiple, waterproof flashlights and lanterns in your kit during emergencies will prove extremely useful. Candles will come in handy if your batteries lose power” (Southern Oak, 15).
