For the past few decades, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have substituted our diet with genetically transformed foods, which have negatively affected human health as well as the surrounding local communities. Being unaffected by pesticides, genetically modified organisms are produced by the merging genes of different species that are joined through genetic engineering, something that would be intolerable to Mother Nature herself (The Non-GMO Project). Eating these genetically altered as well processed foods can lead to increased risk of diseases and even cancer (Genetically Modified Food). Most of the time we do not even realize that we are eating these deadly poisons as they are instilled in our food …show more content…
Although genetically modified organisms were only introduced around 1996, the consequences since then can already be seen. There have been increased allergic reactions, antibiotic resistant bacteria and other toxic hazards. While these side effects of genetically modified organisms may seem insignificant but the long-term effects can be far more severe. Due to increased genetically modified organisms consumption, more and more youngsters are developing life-threatening allergies. Already about 37 people have died due to the side effects of genetically modified organisms, 1,500 partly paralyzed and 5,000 were momentarily handicapped by the chemicals used in harvesting GMOs (Smith, “Genetic Roulette” 258). These statistics do not include the number of children that have been born with birth defects linked with the chemical, glyphosate. Glyphosate is a chemical that is know to cause infertility, stillbirths, miscarriages and cancers. Scientists established that glyphosate can cause deformities comparable to human birth defects discovered in genetically modified soy-producing areas. In particular, the researchers found malformations of the head and the facial structure. Basically, genetically modified organisms might cause babies to be born looking like Cyclops (with one eye). Seeing that genetically modified organisms have only been believed to be “safe” for human consumption for a little over 15 years and there have been no long-term studies performed on actual people. However, the research done with animals’ fetuses represents the development of human babies. With continued exposure to genetically modified organisms, the numbers regarding the side effects is only to continue on a rise. As we continue to eat genetically modified organisms, we consider less the effects they can have on our bodies and reproduction of upcoming
