How Genes Generate Phenotype

How do genes generate the Phenotype?
“Every aspet of an organism is determined or influenced by the genes of the organism”
What genes are, what they do, how they interact with eachother and the enviroment to generate a phenotype.

Genes are segments of DNA that code for proteins or RNA molecules. These genes are the genetic material that is passed down from generation to generation in all species. The individual DNA segments each individual carries are known as their alleles or genotype. When two alleles are identical they are homozygous and when they are different they are heterozygous. These alleles are expressed physically through what is known as the phenotype. An example of a phenotype of a gene is hair color, which may be blond or brown.

In humans, a zygote starts out with a complete set of genes from its mother and father. The DNA is transcribed or copied into RNA sequences known as mRNA. These mRNA sequences are translated to make proteins. These proteins then dictate which chemical proceses will take place in the zygote’s development.
The physical traits that are expressed or visibly seen are determined by which genes or alleles actually get expressed in the genome. At the beginning of life, all genes are turned on, then they are selectively silenced. The phenotype is generated throughout the life of organism. The genes carry the codes that make enzymes that carry all the molecular processes in a living organism. The proteins made then determine the phenotype. However, the phenotype is overall determined by three things, an individuals alleles or genes, their enviroment and randomn life processes.

For example, there can be incomplete dominance where there is a mix of alleles, where neither is dominant. An example, is a Red flower and a white flower that mate and make a pink flower.

Codominance is where both alleles are expressed but not blended.

The genes are transcribed to produce mRNA. The mRNA is translated to produce proteins. The proteins are more often than not enzymes, that catalyze reactions that would otherwise take forever to happen. These reactions involve the formation of products that are functioning in the cell for various things such as structural support, fibers, cytoskeleton, channels on membrane, enzymes that metabolize food molecules like glucose, energy production, transport, signal systems, pigmentation, attachment to other cells and more. These together, work in an orchestrated manner to produce characters that we can physically see. For example, there is a gene that produces protein involved in the production of melanin (skin pigment). When this gene is mutated or non-functional, the enzyme is not produced. Hence, the pathway of melanin production is shut down and that person does not produce any melanin pigment. This is what we see and call as albinism, the people without any pigment in their skin, hair and eyes…

A person’s genotype comes directly from their genetic makeup, whereas a person’s phenotype relates directly to their physical attributes via protein development. The two are intertwined by the process of synthesis with transcription and translation. DNA is transcribed into RNA which then uses that DNA as a template to translate into a polypeptide forming the trait or attribute. Depending on the DNA or genotype, the RNA or phenotype is conversely related. The process of synthesis with the gene to a protein is based on a triplet code, or a three-base word called codons. These codons are the building blocks between DNA and RNA that make up the amino acids in a polypeptide chain.…

An organism’s genotype is the genetic makeup of that organism. This is the bases of nucleotide in the organism’s DNA. The phenotype is the distinction between an organism’s physical traits, in which it derives from the actions of the broad variety of proteins. The buildup of an organism is composed of the structural proteins and the metabolic activities that are catalyzed by the enzymes. The combination of the proteins is quantified by the DNA. Nonetheless a protein is not assembled by a gene, nevertheless communicates the instructions to do so in the form of the RNA. This programs the process of the protein.…

Although gene products are being acted upon by the environment, the genes themselves experience shifts in frequencies, causing a certain gene to be dominant in the gene pool, while another gene is not as prevalent. In addition to this counter, Sapienza would argue that selective factors influence gene frequencies to shift, thereby directly acting upon the genes. Ignoring the process of selection, Sapienza would argue that the genes would primarily be selected due to his definition of Natural Selection. With this in mind, even though gene products are present and active in the environment, the core of the product being influenced is still the…
