Fear often becomes our worst enemy when it makes you become irrational and stops you from thinking clearly. First of all, fear can make us become overly cautious, to the point where it causes harm. In Nadine Gordimer’s novel “Once Upon a Time” a family builds a barbed wire wall because they are so afraid of the robberies and the boy decides to explore the fence and dies from being shredded by the wire “(the boy) dragged a ladder to the wall, the shining coiled tunnel...with the first fixing of its razor-teeth in his knees and hands and head he… struggled deeper into its tangle.” (Gordimer, 6 ). The family built the fence to protect themselves but it only ended up hurting them. The family’s fear ended up destroying them. Throughout my life,…

Unfortunately, it can also lead people to do terrible things. Our fear of failure can motivate us to do great things, however we fear what we do not know and that can lead us to do things that we later regret and allow it to manipulate us. In Rwanda Hutu leaders were able to manipulate their people to believe that the Tutsis were the cause of their economic depression, famine, and that they were a threat to the Hutu’s way of life. In Lord of the Flies fear is a major theme and how fear impacts our choices. In the book Simon says " 'Maybe there is a beast....maybe it 's only us. '" (Golding 80) This quote clearly identifies how the boys begin to live on the island not just in fear of the dangerous animals or what their futures might hold, but also now they are living in fear of each other. Later in the book there is a scene where simon comes running down the beach at night and out of fear the other boys slaughter him believing that he was the beast. Likewise, in Rwanda, many people were killed because of fear of the unknown and ignorance of the Hutu…

In this country, we have the opportunity to make choices on our own because not everyone have the same belief, so therefore we do not have fear. In the stories that we read, we can see that they didn't have that opportunity because they had to follow certain beliefs. If they committed some crime they would be punished for their actions. Theodore Roosevelt once said, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” What is fear? Fear can be a noun or a verb. In the noun form, it is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. In the verb form, it is to be afraid of someone or something that is dangerous, painful, or threatening. If one person looks into fear, then that person becomes feared. But imagine a whole society or community looking into fear. The fear not only gets larger as it spreads, but it also gets more fearful than it already is. The power of fear can be displayed in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and in Ronald Oakley’s “The Great Fear”. As fear moves on from one mind to the next, it leaves the victim panicked and paranoid about everything that revolves around him or her. This “symptom” is known as hysteria. In The Crucible, the hysteria greatly affected the people of Salem. As well as “The Great Fear”, the whole world was in chaos and turmoil due to mass hysteria. The consequences that followed were innocent people became accused and were persecuted (affected victims), self control and limits to go out of hand (people behaved hysterically), unjustified trials and judgments or accusations to be declared (pressures), and superiors to become defied (misuse of power).…

According to Arash Javanbakht and Linda Saab, both Assistant professors of Psychiatry at Wayne State University. They explain that fear is a defense mechanism. The brain prepares us when we sense danger, the first reaction is in the amygdala, a set of nuclei near the temporal lobe, it senses emotion, mostly anger and fear and this allows our bodies to trigger the fight or flight method. Studies from the University of Minnesota explain that fear even sharpens our sense to help survival, it improves eyesight and shuts down the digestive system, which is necessary for survival. While the brain and body attempt to help us survive, fear can still harm a human. Chronic fear can lead to physical health problems, such as the weakening of the immune system, accelerated aging, and even premature death. Fear can also lead to mental health problems, such as depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. This shows that while fear triggers the defense mechanism in your brain, it also can have negative long lasting effects on a person. All in all, while people see different forms of fear and cope in different ways, fear, while just an emotion, can affect a person so much that they have to live with its problems for the rest of their…

Therefore, we develop a fear that is on a different aspect of life. They may happen in true to life situation, not as a kid, they are more like fictitious and fantasize. Most teenagers are afraid of test and exam taking, talking to parents about personal problems, peer pressure, not fitting in with people around you, life after high school, the future, poor academic performance, and not getting good grades. We struggle when we don't have enough money to buy things we like. Auditions, try out, interviews and public speaking are probably the most nerve wrecking we have to overcome. We’re afraid of commitment, losing a loved one and friend. We’re also afraid of not having enough time to do everything we have to accomplish on time and not being able to meet the…

Facing my fears has been a big part of my life. I can remember when I was in grade 5 at the Pigotts Primary School and my teacher at the time Mrs. Knight said to the class; “class, in two years you’ll be doing the common entrance exam.” My first thoughts were, “I wonder if it’s hard?” Then the teacher said, “Students you all must start working harder, because this exam is not easy.” I placed my hand to my face like this (display with actions) then in a soft tone I whispered a favorite quote of mine, “Bugz (my alias then) one man can so sall?” Now at that point I didn’t know if I was physical or mentally able to overcome that obstacle of common entrance but I already started being negative. We should never be willing to give up so quickly. Instead of being negative we should…

I suppose you are wondering why I am speaking of fear as an educational topic. To begin we will have to take a trip back in time. August of 2003 was an exciting and fearful time in my life. The months to come would be uncertain and frightful. My, now, husband was graduating high school and our future was coming at us fast. I was certain in my career path of nursing. My husband, on the other hand, was undecided. We had already been together for two years. I knew I would marry that man. We were planning our lives together at the young ages 18 and 20.…
