how far was the threat of communism the main reason for hitler becoming chancellor

There were many different reasons that led Hitler to becoming chancellor and these included the fear of communism, the great depression, Hitler’s leadership skills and propaganda. This essay will outline how the fear of communism helped Hitler in becoming chancellor as well as other reasons.
Communism scared many Germans especially those of a higher or middle class because communists wanted to equally spread people’s wealth meaning Germans always felt unprotected. Another reason for Germans being afraid of communists was because of their violence, which began when killing the royal family in the Ussr. This meant that Germany wanted protection and the SA gave Germans exactly that as they went around arresting and murdering communists. This increased Hitler’s supporters because German’s felt safer with the SA as well as Hitler overcoming the threat of communism by trying to overthrow them. In addition, when farmers read about communist farming policies in the USSR it instantly made all farmers dislike communists and more began to support Hitler. This also got owners of big industries worried in case the same happens to them so again they also opposed communists.
Although communism really did contribute to Hitler becoming chancellor, there was also the great depression. Things went from bad to worse for the Germans as they had very little food and no jobs and they didn’t even get unemployment benefits, but instead had to live on crisis payments. People were so depressed and fed up of the government that they were turning to more extreme governments which highlights how the social democrats were failing. The Nazi party were able to take advantage of the economic depression as they had promised both food and jobs for people so Germany had some hope left in them to help get Germany out of the depression because the Weimar failed to do so. Communism made the great depression worse because people felt insecure and had more to worry about.
Another reason which led to Hitler becoming chancellor was his leadership skills and the propaganda he used to promote the Nazi Party to the public. Hitler campaigned endlessly giving speeches all around Germany and these speeches were very persuasive and he made people feel like they were living for the Nazi Party which made them feel strong, brave and devoted. Whilst travelling to give these speeches he used to travel by aeroplane which could be seen as organised and impressive as well as using the most of new technology and this is something leaders of other parties had not done. Also, Hitler used propaganda to help himself become chancellor. He placed posters all around Germany promising food and jobs and this was telling people what they want to hear and giving the Germans back their pride. This was something that the communists were not doing and Hitler really took advantage of this.
On the 30th January 1933, Hitler was invited to become chancellor because in the period of eight months, three chancellors, Bruning, Papen and Schleincher, had come and gone due to being very unpopular with the Reichstag and asking Hindenburg to use decree for everything. This also proved to be an advantage for Hitler because the Nazi party were already the most popular party in the Reichstag so both Hitler and Hindenburg knew that Hitler would get support.
To conclude, I don’t think that the threat of communism was themain reason for Hitler becoming chancellor in 1933 because although it did play a large role, I think factors such as the great depression are equally as important.
