Because of this, Huck leaves his father and finds Jim, Miss Watson’s household slave. Even though in the beginning of the novel, Huck sees Jim as nothing more than just a runaway slave who is accompanying him to embark on their journey down the Mississippi River to the town of Cairo together. His communication skills as well as coherent thoughts grow damaged, making it near impossible for him to answer immediately. Later in the novel, he replies, "You'll get back to where you came from" proving that he has a higher understanding of society than the boys, but his ability to share his knowledge lacks. The American Psychological association states that the one telltale sign of schizophrenia is, “hallucinations, such as hearing voices or seeing things that other do not experience.” This lets us know that what Simon hears and sees does not exist in reality, instead it emerges from his…

The White Americans significantly had an advantage against the African Americans. Mark Twain wrote, “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” to display how a black man can be a father figure of a typical white child. The two Jims, Jim Finn or “Pap” and Jim the black run-away slave differ in verities of ways. Pap, as Huck’s biological father is portrayed as a drunk and a complete failure. Considering Pap’s negative behavior, Huck never really liked Pap because of his violent acts and Pap was ignorant towards Huck’s school work. Jim the slave however was presented as Huck’s father figure. Throughout the journey with Huck, Jim felt the need to take care of Huck just like his kids at home. Again, Huck never liked his real father Pap so it…

Pi sees Richard Parker as a companion and not an enemy. So, an emotional need of Pi is companionship and having a sense of purpose. “ It was Richard Parker who calmed me down. It is the irony of this story that the one who scared me witless to start with was the very same who brought me peace, purpose, I dare even say wholeness” (Martel 162). With this said, although Richard Parker may be the one that scared him witless the whole entire time, it kept him alert and gave him a purpose to keep living and stay true to his goals and faith. Next, Pi also needs something to keep his mind busy and sane. So, he creates a schedule. “I kept myself busy. That was one key to my survival. On a lifeboat, even on a raft, there’s always something that needs doing” (Martel 190). Every human needs something going on in their head because if not, they would be dead. Pi acknowledges that and creates a schedule for himself to keep him busy and sane. This goes along with the sense of purpose and not giving up on what he set himself to…

Moral breakdown is a phenomenon in which a major degradation or a complete loss of moral values takes place within a particular society. Theodore Roosevelt once said, “To educate a person in the mind but not in morals is to educate a menace in society.” Morals are the basis by which people live in a positive manner because morals typically mean that people are compassionate to our fellow beings. When people have morals we know right from wrong. It's important to have morals with a smart mind so that they understand the consequences of their actions. In the novel Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain describes that Huck Finn has moral degradation or no morals between lying, murder and greed.…

Someone once said, “Your real father isn’t the person who gave life to you; it’s the man who raised you, cared for you, and looked out for you no matter what.” In Mark Twain’s novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, one can presume that, Jim is a more suitable father figure in Huck’s life when compared to his actual father. Pap treats Huck like he’s his own slave, whereas Jim treats Huck with compassion and genuinely cares for him. Throughout the beginning of the story when Pap is present all he does is uses Huck for his money, labor, and even just someone to beat when he gets drunk. On the other hand Jim takes Huck under his wing and does the best he can to help him grow in life while shielding him from danger whenever possible. The difference between the two is very evident and shows that Jim is really the one who steps up and takes the father role in…

Similarly, when Simon is murdered, they attempt to avoid the topic to keep away from feeling responsible for his death, although all the boys on the island took part in his death. Piggy is a representation of truth and knowledge, this is the reason why he is not well accepted by any of the boys on the island. Golding used the theme of denial very cleverly. This theme is very important to the structure of the novel, without this theme the outcome of this writing would have greatly differed and would have caused many changes throughout the…
