How Does Shakespeare Show the Importance of Pride and Honour in One or Two Male Characters in Romeo and Juliet? - Paragraph
How does Shakespeare show the importance of pride and honour in one or two male characters in Romeo and Juliet?

The scene in which pride is most shown is Act III Scene 1. The two most prideful characters are Tybalt and Mercutio. Shakespeare shows the two characters’ pride by using carefully chosen words. Tybalt says: ‘Thou consortest with Romeo.’ The word ‘consort’, which was very negative for an Elizabethan audience, strongly hurts Mercutio’s pride. His reaction indeed proves it: ‘I will not budge for no man’s pleasure I.’ Shakespeare shows Mercutio’s arrogance and stubbornness, thus his pride. His strong self-esteem is also shown with the words ‘O calm, dishonourable, vile submission’. Shakespeare uses the word ‘submission’ to present Mercutio’s disgust of the fact of losing face. The way in which Romeo’s friend responds to Tybalt’s insults is violent: he immediately starts to fight him, oblivious to Benvolio’s warnings. This reaction, along with the word ‘dishonourable’ perfectly describes Mercutio’s misplaced honour, thus turning into pride. Mercutio’s sense of being, which can be perceived as arrogance, is shown until the very last moments of his life: as he is wounded and dying, Mercutio still jokes and tries to catch his friends’ attention: ‘Ask for me tomorrow, and you shall find me a grave man.’, ‘Ay, ay, a scratch, a scratch.’ Mercutio, until the very last minute of his life, doesn’t want to show he was defeated by a ‘braggart.’ Shakespeare also shows Tybalt’s pride in this scene. It is seen directly through his words: ‘thou consortest’ and ‘thou art a villain’. At first sight, it seems like Tybalt wants to honour his family. However, neither Montagues nor Capulets know the reason of the everlasting grudge. Consequently, Tybalt isn’t violent to honour his family, he insults for the sake of insulting, for the sake of feeling superior in front of other people. This misplaced honour is in fact pride and arrogance. Tybalt says to Romeo: ‘Boy, […] turn and draw.’ Shakespeare here shows the young people’s strong will of being a man, when in fact they are acting like children.
This scene, in which Tybalt fights twice, reminds the play’s first scene when he retorts: ‘Talk of peace? I hate the word.’ Shakespeare wants to depict Tybalt as a hot-headed, humourless young man whose pride led him to his own death. The same can be said for Mercutio whose arrogance resulted in his murder. After a thorough analysis of the scene it can be seen that both characters are actually quite similar, alike in pride. In this very important scene, both characters’ pride lead in their own deaths and thus in the unfolding of the following events: the importance of pride is thus shown by Shakespeare as the rest of the play is decided by the characters’ pride and their consequences.

When Tybalt seeks Romeo in a public street, Mercutio challenges him to "couple [his words] with something" and "make it a word and a blow". His recklessness and quick response for something so dangerous is a demonstration of his preferences. However, as a kind of side effect, his preferences tend to pull the spotlight away from the main characters. Mercutio duels Tybalt when the swordplay is meant for Romeo.…

An unlikely source of wisdom, he tells a depressed Romeo to, "Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down" meaning Romeo should be rough with love if it is rough with him, and to regain his enthusiasm for love (Act I, Scene IV, Line 28) . Mercutio meets his death in Act III, Scene I when he rashly draws his sword on Tybalt who had been trying unsuccessfully to provoke Romeo into fighting. Famous for the words, "a scratch, a scratch; marry, 'tis enough" which describe his fatal wound by Tybalt, Mercutio's death results in Tybalt's death when Romeo avenges the death of his friend (Line 98). It has been argued in some literary circles that Mercutio was "removed" as he was increasingly stealing the show from Romeo, the lead character (with Juliet) in this…

Mercutio is an important foil character for Romeo as his realistic mindset amplifies Romeo’s dreamy and romantic thinking. First, Mercutio heightens Romeo’s idealistic mentality, as Mercutio has no belief in true love. For example, as Romeo expresses his love for Rosaline, Mercutio mocks him and points out that love is non-existent. This is represented when Mercutio says, “If love be rough with you, be rough with love. Prick love for pricking and you beat love down,” (Shakespeare, 1.4, 27-28). This quote reveals Mercutio’s sour attitude towards love and highlights Romeo's childish thinking. Moreover, Romeo is lost in grief and feels his world has fallen apart while Mercutio realizes the unnecessary gloominess Romeo is bringing upon himself. This in turn makes Mercutio a great foil as his knowledge and maturity contrasts with Romeo's innocence. Second, Mercutio’s death highlights Romeo’s rashness, his impulsive mentality, and foreshadows further catastrophe in the play.…

Shakespeare depicts love that can empower one to challenge the convention and the tradition in the world in which they live. In the patriarchal society, it is unthinkable for the daughter to defy her parents. Juliet goes against all social restraints when she contradicted her parents with, “I will not marry yet; and when I do, I swear it shall be Romeo.” Even her father’s outburst of rage in “young baggage, disobedient wretch!” did not change her plans. And in the world where names mean more than just a way to address oneself, she advises Romeo to "Deny thy father and refuse thy name… And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.’’ Young Juliet experiences love that gives her courage to challenge all that is expected of a young unmarried lady of noble background. Therefore her love liberates her from the bondage of the social mores of the time.…

The characteristics of Mercutio have a significant influence on the events that occurred during Act 3 scene 1. It is evident throughout the scene that Benvolio is the peacekeeper as he see's a way around the brawling, (3.1.1-3) ' I pray thee, good Mercutio, lets retire. The day is hot; the Capulet’s abroad; and if we meet we shall not 'scape a brawl.' However, Mercutio ignores Benvolio’s attempts to bypass the Montague Capulet conflict, as he is quick to temper and always ready for a fight. His use of irony to provoke Tybalt (3.1.28-33) provides further evidence on his combativeness ‘But I’ll be hanged, sir, if he wear your livery. Marry; go before to the field, he’ll be your follower. Your worship in that sense may call him man. ‘ Mercutio’s argumentative attitude leads him into a brutal affair; he is left wounded blaming Romeo for his injury. Shakespeare uses Mercutio as a foil to Romeo. They are alike in many ways in the way that they talk and their conclusions. Their characters are lively and excessively dramatic in the way that they speak and act. Romeo and Mercutio also meet the same end, both because of Romeo. They also have numerous differences that show their behavioral and personality distinction. Mercutio has a way of thinking that is partially negative but more rational than Romeo's impatient, love-seeking mind. The comparison shows common sense [Mercutio] as opposed to impatient and impractical [Romeo]. They are similar and different at the same time but it helps us better understand Romeo as a character when we see him compared to Mercutio.…

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. To me, Othello was the living validation of this quote from the Holy Bible. Othello, a noble man to us all, an admirable leader to our army, a valuable friend to everyone, and a doting brother to myself. Citizens of Venice, fellow Venetian army, most humble duke, and gracious God above, it is with great sorrow that I, Michael Cassio, as his former officer and the leader of the Venetian army, stand here today to bid farewell to a man such as him who breathed his last far too early; For Venice has lost not only a well respected leader and significant member in our community, but also a friend. The Venetian army will no longer have an admirable commander like him to cherish for not only the valiant battles, but also the integrity. He was truly like the lion in our animal kingdom, with unwavering heroism and nobility which he passed down to us.…
