How Does Shakespeare Present Lady Macbeth In Act 1
Act 1 study questions

My impression of Lady Macbeth at the end of Act 1 is that she is a welcoming, gracious hostess but she is also a snake. She appears to be a nice person but in reality is a cold hearted person that would not mind killing her own baby. As the play Macbeth begins, the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth seems to be one of trust and commitment. Macbeth finds himself caught up in the predictions the witches make and he confides what he has learned from the witches in a letter to Lady Macbeth. She pridefully boasts and begins to allow her ideas of his possible power to spin out of control. She uses all of her womanly influence to manipulate him into killing his cousin, Duncan, to become king. She goes so far as to question his manhood if he does not kill him.

This play is about darkness and evil or about riddles or paradoxes. The weather reflects the stormy passions that will lead

When Duncan makes Malcolm his heir, Duncan directly blocks Macbeth’s path to the throne, which tips the balance in favor to violence.

Lady MacBeth wins every argument because she questions men's manhood. Lady Macbeth is also more argumentative, single minded and logical because she comes up with an evil plot to kill and not get caught, get the reluctant Macbeth to kill his King and friends and lusts after power. Macbeth is the more sensitive character

Dramatic irony, He praises the place where, if his hosts had their way, he will be murdered.

It could be explained if Macbeth in fact has already wanted or plotted to become king. Evidence: Scene 3, 1.51 A guilty conscience might be why he starts. Scene 3, 2. 134-137 he immediately thinks of murder although the witches said nothing of it and he did not murder to get the first two titles, perhaps because he has already considered

At the beginning of the play, in Act I, Scene II, Macbeth is introduced as a valiant warrior whose actions have gained great trust and honour from the king, Duncan. He is portrayed as a man who would do anything for his king. The sergeant tells the audience of Macbeth’s bravery and loyalty by saying ‘for brave Macbeth—well he deserves that name—distaining fortune, with his brandish’d steel’, explaining to the audience that Macbeth earned the title ‘brave’ through his actions, having no fear of fate. Duncan also praises Macbeth for his actions by calling him ‘O valiant cousin! Worthy gentleman!’ expressing his gratitude towards Macbeth for his loyalty and disregard for his own safety, protecting his country and his king and destroying the enemy and traitor, Macdonwald. Although their relation is distant, Duncan is so close to Macbeth as to name him ‘cousin’, clearly showing that he has much faith and trust in him. The ways in which the King and Sergeant refer to Macbeth and the language that they use clearly show that Macbeth is a trusted and relied upon member of the Scottish army and shows his bravery in battle to prove his valiancy.…

Lady Macbeth on the other hand is almost completely different to Macbeth – I guess opposites attract – but they have a couple of similarities for example she talks about the future just like Macbeth. Lady Macbeth is as not as gentle and caring as your stereotypical Jacobean woman but instead she looks like “the innocent flower” when in reality she is “The serpent under it” who is ready to attack. Lady Macbeth is more collected than Macbeth, she remains in control under pressure and she does not panic and she knows what she’s talking about she doesn’t seem to have any morality she has a way with her words, she is extremely persuasive so she uses that to her advantage and makes Macbeth do everything she says to do.…

Macbeth is a very power greedy person. It is not necessarily his own doing that he is such a ruthless person. It all started (Macbeth being power greedy) with the Three Witches predictions: "All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, thane of Glamis!/ All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, thane of/ Cawdor!/ All hail, Macbeth! That shalt be king hereafter." (1.3.50-54)

As soon as Macbeth learned of his future, he began to scheme on just exactly how he would fulfill these prophecies. That is when he decided that he would have to murder Duncan to fulfill the last prophecy. But that is when he had a change or heart.

The only problem with Macbeth deciding not to murder Duncan, is that all of a sudden Lady Macbeth became the power greedy one. This is when Lady Macbeth's scheming began. Although Macbeth had changed his mind and basically refused to murder Duncan, Lady Macbeth was able to eventually convince him to carry through with the plan.

Even though Macbeth was the one who executed the plan, Lady Macbeth was the mastermind behind the scheme. Her greed for power was the one major factor that possessed her to convince Macbeth of the plan and carry through with it. Macbeth murdered Duncan at Iverness, and became hysterical after doing so. As a result of Malcolm and Donalbain's suspicions resulting in their departure to England and Ireland Macbeth became king: this was the ultimate power that he and Lady Macbeth had as their goal (well, actually it was more of Lady Macbeth's goal), and now he eventually had received it. Nothing was going to take away this ultimate power from Macbeth, and he would do anything to keep it. Macbeth's ruthlessness results in him ordering three murderers to murder his best friend, Banquo. The power of being king has taken over Macbeth's life, and he is a victim of his own greed for power. He is a tyrant. Not only does Macbeth murder Banquo (not directly, of course), he also murders (actually he has people murder) Macbuffs family.…

At the start of the play Macbeth is brave and loyal and displays many of the attributes of a great king. However after conversing with the three witches his state of mind goes on a downward spiral eventually ending in his demise. His thirst for power and wealth cause him to act foolishly and with haste rather than waiting to see if the witches’ predictions come true. It is clear from Macbeths reaction to King Duncan telling Malcom that he will be Prince of Cumberland that Macbeths desires have already started to take a toll on his mind ‘That is a step on which I must fall down, or else o'erleap, For in my way it lies.’ (I. IV. 48). This clearly shows that ambition is taking away Macbeths rational thoughts and he is choosing to act without thought towards the consequences and is only focused on his goal of becoming…

The first cause of Macbeth becoming king is that the witches told him that he would, in fact, be king. The witches had a vision of Macbeth being crowned, and when they summoned him he was taken up by the shocking news. He went home and told his wife. She, on the other hand, became quite aroused by the idea of royalty, and cursed herself to kill her conscience causing her to have a self-destructing thirst for hunger. Thus, rubbing off on Macbeth, leading to the second cause, which is a lust for power. After Lady Macbeth convinced Macbeth to kill Duncan (the current king ) and he succeeded at the task, Macbeth was one step closer to becoming king, there was nothing to lose. He soon went to drastic measure, making sure his men were killing anyone who posed as a threat to his throne. This was the peak of his downfall, complete and utter hubris. Macbeth had what he wanted. He was a king, not a very good one, and not one that anyone else wanted, but he had power. And it felt good. Until, he was heavy with guilt.…

Within the play of Macbeth, Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as ambitious and vicious when she is first introduced in Act 1 Scene 5. Lady Macbeth is the one of the main reasons the play played out like it did. Although, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth treat each other as friends, they both have an equal say in what happens, but Lady Macbeth seems to contribute more opinion than Macbeth does. When her husband writes to Lady Macbeth about the witches, she was excited, she wanted to be queen and she did not care what had to happen for her to get there. Even if she had to force her husband to do it for her. Even though Lady Macbeth is a huge influence in the murder of Duncan and the downfall of Macbeth, there are some other factors involved. For one, the witches prophecies created the thought of Macbeth being the King…

In the play Macbeth, Shakespeare portrays Macbeth as a very heroic character who doesn’t seem to be afraid of anything. He is described as a warrior who stabbed a man in the stomach, cut him from there to the throat, and cut his head off and stuck it on a post. The type of man that would do something like this definitely does not seem like the type of man who would be nervous to become king. Even if the only way he was going to become king was by murdering the man who is currently king, and in this specific case it would be King Duncan of Scotland. Personally, I believe that Macbeth’s imagination both prompts him to commit and crime and also makes it hard for him to commit the crime because he over thinks things, he listens to his wife too much, and he desires power too much.…

The relationship of the Macbeths is backwards, Lady Macbeth is twisted and cruel, like the witches, while Macbeth is more ethical but being led by a bad example. Lady Macbeth is a corrupted mind that influences Macbeth into doing the unspeakable. The way she speaks about her not acting as a woman and wanting to do deeds that are horrid is very shifty. "The raven himself is hoarse that croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan under my battlements..."…
