How Does Race Affect The Formation Of Identity?

Identity in sociological terms; is how people make sense of themselves as members of particular groups in society. However, there are many elements that refers to identity such as; gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and many others. The formation of identity is a complex process. Race is a key element impacting upon the formation of my identity. Race is a term used to categorize humans by their visible differences. For example, White, Asian or Black. However, according to social sciences, ‘race’ is put in quotation marks to emphasize the fact that it should not be classified on the basis of physical characteristics only but, should account for the fact race is a socially constructed term and serves an essential purpose in relation to the formation of identity. Some people may accept people with different skin tones but others might not be open to accepting them. Living in a country with multiracial people made it easier to build my own identity with no racial problems. Schools with mix students makes it seem more normal for a family and friends to be different. For instance, I went a school district that was mixed. I grew up in a town that was known for its diversity. During, my time at high school there was always someone with a different skin tone then my own walking down the hallway. Growing up in a multicultural society helps you become tolerant to racial problems. Which helped with accepting any diversity that came my way.
