How Does Playing Violent Video Games Lead To Violent Behavior?
Does playing violent video games lead to violent behaviour? There are many arguments both agreeing and disagreeing with this statement, in my own opinion, I believe that playing such games does have a negative impact on player based on the research I have done for this essay. Video games are becoming more easily accessible to both children and adolescents. Nearly every major leading supermarkets sell the top rated video games of all genres, including violence. Although the recommended age ratings on these games may prevent adults from purchasing these games, it does not stop both children and adolescents from playing them online or at their friend’s houses. Due to the fact that these games can be so easily obtained, it is obviously a growing concern for parents, governments and psychologist if these games are having any effect on their children. In this essay I would like to discuss the following: how to tell if a video game is violent, what is considered a violent video game, the different forms and theories of aggression, some real life examples of the negative effects video games have on the player and finally some links between violent video games and behaviour, all focused on children and adolescents being the players.

How do we know if a video game is violent or not? More often than not, the recommended age rating (g, pg., 12, 15, 16, and 18)

According to Richard J.Gerrig (2013), aggression is behaviours that cause psychological or physical harm to another individual. It differs from other social behaviours as there is an intention to harm someone. You can differentiate ‘horse-play’ from true aggression by measuring the extent of the victim’s injuries for example: a swollen lip or a black eye. There are many factors that lead to aggression such as frustration, childhood experiences, and exposure to violence, physiological factors (men have higher levels of testosterone which can lead to aggression), cognitive factors and provocation

Violent video games are not causing kids to be violent people If there was an experiment created where a person was placed in front of a television screen, given a controller and allowed to play a violent first person shooter for an hour, would one feel the urge to shoot a school up? The question is do violent video games lead to violent behaviors? The research shows that violent video games cause heightened aggression, but not a more violent behavior. What trying to argue is that violent video games do not lead to violent behaviors. But on the other hand people think that just because one plays a violent video game, must make them a bad person. Violent video games do not connect to violent behavior because there is no single factor that leads a person to be violent or aggressive, just because…

While many parents scoff at letting their children watch violent movies, they often consent to buying violent video games for their teenagers without checking the industry ratings. Researchers contend that a link exists between violent video games and real-life violence in teenagers and young adults. Violent images don't necessarily create violent children, but gamers learn that violence is an accepted means to solve problems, and they perfect shooting skills as though they were handling real weapons. Even though games can teach children valuable coordination skills, parents and caregivers need to make sure that their children only view age-appropriate content and are made aware of the difference between on-screen actions and socially acceptable behavior in the real world.…

Video games have always existed way before these When the game Mortal Kombat was first released in 1992 and the sudden implement of major blood and violence was seen in the gaming industry many people began to complain because anyone could pick up this game without knowing what they were going to see. This led to the implement and creation of a rating system for video games just like the movies which categorized games with letters and was mandatory for all games to have a rating. The simple ratings are ‘E” for everyone, “T’ for teen and “M” for mature. When purchasing a game that is not suitable for the age a parent has to be present with the child in order for it to be purchased. Many parents still blame video games for exposing their children to violence when their the ones buying it for them and not even checking the game to see of it s safe for their children. The media has focused on these very few games that involve violence and has made them the face of video games without even taking notice of the countless innocent games that are still available.…

Video games with violent themes are a very large part of the American culture. Children and young adults spend an enormous amount of time playing video games in today’s world. It is a popular belief that video games cause violent behavior in children and young adults. There have been hundreds of studies to either prove or disprove the idea that violent video games cause violent action in real life. In my opinion, the link between violent games and the behavior problems seen in some of today’s youth is just not there. Many of the studies are inconclusive. The studies I have found that are not inconclusive, I find to have unanswered questions and missing variables.…

The video games phenomenon is somewhat new in this modern society. Although they often to be entertaining, the contents have become more violent and disturbing as computing technology has become much more advanced. These days, the popularity of violent video games has caused an increase in controversy. Parents and experts feel that some games are just too violent and they think that the violent will spill over into the real world. However, I strongly believe violent video games do not cause an increase in aggression in adolescents. In fact in many ways violent video games benefit the children that are playing them.…

A problem challenging the world today is the scientific linkage to video games and violence in today’s youth. As the mother of a pre-teen boy I chose to investigate the surrounding evidence to educate myself and my peers on this seemingly growing problem which I believe connects violent game play with youth aggression. I hope to learn whether or not the games put out on today’s market need to be removed from the shelves and furthermore, I would like to know if they are teaching the children the wrong things and corrupting their minds at early ages.…

Argumentative Essay “If video games do increase violent tendencies outside the laboratory, the explosion of gaming over the past decade from 3.2 billion in sales in 1995 to $7 billion in 2003, according to industry figures, would suggest a parallel trend in youth violence. Instead, youth violence has been decreasing.” (Hoerrner 49). A video game is a game played by electronically manipulating images produced by a computer program on a television screen or display. Violence is behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something. Some video games have violent and mature content in them. People claim that the violence in video games can cause aggression in people. Others claim that the violence in video games has nothing to do with aggression in people. It is also argued that violence in video games has nothing to do with the rage already existing inside of people. Video games do not cause violence because gamers understand that video games are not real, that video games release daily frustration and are inspiring.…

Today, children, teenagers, and adults are exposed to violence throughout their lives. They are exposed through television shows, movies, maybe even on the streets, but what researchers and scientists have proved to be an increasing factor of violence in children and adults is their being exposed to violent video games in which “they can produce violence, emotional outbursts, and inappropriate language”. According to Violent Video Games: The Newest Media Violence Hazard, about 85% or more video games include violent content. Violent content includes: blood and gore, killing, inappropriate language, and sexual content. Since then, many people have been saying that these games promote bad behavior and cause people to be more violent.…

For the past 40 years, since the first video games were created, the gaming industry has developed games that would surpass other games before it. Since the late 70’s, when the first two games of “Pacman” and “Space Invaders” were created, video games have changed tremendously over time. Violence was not realistic, blood was not red, and so violence in video games was not incorporated into the new games that appeared on the market. In the early 90’s, video game makers began using much more detail of violence and blood into video games. This caused an increase in violent video game demand and an increase in realistic violent events incorporated into these games. With technology in video games enhanced, the productivity on violent videos games moved up as well. When a game called ‘Mortal Kombat’ was released with a gruesome death seen in the game, the US Congress had to intervene. They told the gaming industry they had to come up with an accurate grading system to rate the games on age-appropriateness and content-appropriateness. This brought on the “Entertainment Software Rating Board.” While rating each video game and posting that rate on them has improved access by small children, teens and young adults can still buy and view very violent scenes.…

Introduction The video-gaming industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, top selling games producing millions of dollars in their first few days of release. But the industry’s biggest sellers are violent video games (LeClaire, 2006). These days, people are desensitized towards violence that they practically walk past violent events in the street or helpless, injured people without thinking twice or casting a second glance (cyh.com, 2010). Are video games the cause for increased violent behaviour in younger adult generations, as well as the desensitization towards violence? There have been extensive studies on how video games affect young adult’s behaviour, social life, health and attitude towards real-life violence. On the other hand, the positives of video games may outweigh the negative effects. Video games are can be powerful educational tools, among other positive things. It cannot be easily determined if video games overall have positive or negative effects on the behaviour and health of the players.…

Video Games and Violent Children Brittany Hern 02/02/2011 Critical Thinking and Composition Home video games, an industry worth $11 billion domestically that is now 30 years old, continues to be thrown into legal and moral debates regarding what age is deemed appropriate to participate. Video games, especially those deemed to be violent or rated “mature,” are at the center of the controversy. There are two sides to this debate. Video game companies and their supporters lead one side arguing that video games have no affect on children, and maintain that video games deemed “mature” are meant for those ages. The other side of this debate consists of psychologists and parents who argue video games are responsible for what they feel is a growing epidemic of increasingly violent and desensitized children.…
