How Does Oedipus Learn The Deadly Truth
In the tragedy of Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, there is a man who has previously defeated the monstrous Sphinx and the Sphinx’s riddle and has taken the throne of being king of Thebes. The city now needs help to vanish the plague in Thebes. He must find out who killed the previous king and learn about his true identity. In the end, he suffers miserably. During the play, Oedipus starts to feel that he may be the murderer of Laius, but when the truth is revealed, it all comes together. Oedipus wants to leave his fate behind him, but he walks right into it and learns the deadly truth.
In the beginning of the story, Oedipus doesn’t want anything to do with his fate, Oedipus has previously left Corinth to avoid Apollo’s oracle, the oracle was that Oedipus would marry his mother and be his father’s murderer, so he flees out of Corinth to avoid that. Oedipus finds out about the death of Laius, he sends Creon to the oracle to seek much needed information. Oedipus fears that he killed Laius, he starts to blame himself for it. Tiresias tells him he is the wound of Thebes and the cause of the plague, the chorus replies “One day he’ll expose the evil hand and blackened heart of the murdering fiend.”(5) Oedipus thinks he killed Laius. Jocasta is in absolute terror when she realizes Oedipus’ real identity. Jocasta hangs herself because of overwhelming grief. “I find it necessary to seek godly advice on the matter.”(30) “Let the fate of my generation take me where it will.” (31) After Jocasta hangs herself in shock, Oedipus stabs his eyes out, he suffered as his true identity and fate was revealed.
