    Is Hamlet Crazy?

After he found out that Claudius killed his father, Hamlet swore that he would gain vengeance. He also wants vengeance because he is the rightful heir to the throne, an opportunity that was snatched away from his uncle. (Shannon Kisch) In order to get his revenge, he told Horatio he will put on an “antic disposition”. The first explanation for Hamlet’s strange behavior is his love for Ophelia. Ophelia tells the story of how a scruffy looking Hamlet approached her, simply ran his hand down her arm, stared at her and left. Polonius assumes that love for Ophelia drove Hamlet crazy and tells the king of his discovery. Polonius tests his theory by placing Ophelia in the path of Hamlet, before speaking to Hamlet himself. When speaking to Polonius, Hamlet may sound insane, but he uses this conversation to warn Polonius to keep his daughter away from the king (“the sun”) as well as to insult him. These insults and warnings seem to suggest that his madness is nothing but a hoax. In addition, when speaking to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Hamlet drops some of the mad characteristics he displays with other characters. He quotes some of a monologue he had heard some time before when the players arrive on the scene. He also plots revenge and plans how to test the guilt of the king. He does this by inviting his uncle/stepfather and mother to a play, which reenacts the murder of his…

Hamlet is in a situation where his sanity is turning into insanity. He is like one of those people who tell so many lies that they start believing their own lies. Hamlet's acting is so vivid to him that, unconsciously, his state of mind has become irrational. He is turning against everyone in order to follow the orders of revenge from his father's ghost. In order to do so, he is finding any possible way to bring out the guilt in everyone due to his father's murder. In Act III, scene ii, Hamlet has written parts for players to put on a show for Claudius in order for him to bring out the guilt within Claudius. The play doesn't affect Claudius until it is revealed that Lucianus, the kings nephew, is the one that kills the king. Claudius then cries out due to the fear of Hamlet killing him. Also, in this scene, Hamlet admired Horatio's level-headedness and calmness because those are some qualities that Hamlet lacks. Hamlet tries to break his mother down in Act III, scene iv, Hamlet comes to speak to his mother because she believes that he has offended Claudius. In return, Hamlet tries to break her down by putting her sins in front of her because she married the king's brother so soon after his death. When she cries for help, innocent Polonius enters and Hamlet says "How now! A rat?" and kills Polonius because he thought that it was Claudius. Hamlet's insanity is like a blind rage. He is so focused on revenge that he doesn't realize what he is doing. Hamlet is taking sick…

<br>The structure of the scene is an important feature used to display the characters ' ambiguity, especially with the characters of Hamlet and Claudius. Only Hamlet is alone on the stage at any one time, and is therefore the only character who can express his true feelings. Claudius, however, is only on stage when in the company of his court, and cannot be as free with his thoughts and language. The scene can be divided roughly into four sections; the assembly of the court and the King 's speeches, Hamlet 's soliloquy, the discussion about the ghost, and Hamlet 's second shorter soliloquy. However the extract in question only concerns the first two sections.…

Consequently, Hamlets’ tragic flaw leads to his downfall. His lack of action causes him not to kill Claudius when he has the chance, giving him the advantage. It can be seen that Claudius has the advantage to kill Hamlet when he states, “By letters conjuring to that effect/The present death of Hamlet. Do it, England” (4.3.65-6). Since Hamlet reveals that he knows that Claudius killed the former king, Claudius is deceiving Hamlet into going to England, where he will be executed. Hamlet reveals his knowledge of the murder when he puts on the play, re-enacting the former King’s murder. Now Claudius knows that he must kill Hamlet in order to avoid getting caught and stay on the throne. Claudius tells Hamlet that he is sending him to England for…

In ‘Hamlet’, major antagonist is a shrewd, lustful, conniving king who contrasts sharply with the other male characters in the play. Whereas most of the other important men in ‘Hamlet’ are preoccupied with ideas of justice, revenge, and moral balance, Claudius is bent upon maintaining his own power. The old King Hamlet was apparently a stern warrior, but Claudius is a corrupt politician whose main weapon is his ability to manipulate others through his skillful use of language. Claudius’s speech is compared to poison being poured in the ear, the method he used to murder Hamlet’s father. Claudius’s love for Gertrude may be sincere, but it also seems likely that he married her as a strategic move, to help him win the throne away from Hamlet after the death of the king. As the play progresses, Claudius’s mounting fear of Hamlet’s insanity leads him to even greater self-preservation; when Gertrude tells him that Hamlet has killed Polonius, Claudius does not remark that Gertrude might have been in danger, but only that he would have been in danger had he been in the room. He tells Laertes the same thing as he attempts to soothe the young man’s anger after his father’s death. Claudius is ultimately too crafty for his own good. In Act five, rather than allowing Laertes only two methods of killing Hamlet, the sharpened sword and the poison on the blade, Claudius insists on a third, the poisoned goblet. When Gertrude inadvertently drinks the poison and dies, Hamlet is at last able to bring himself to kill Claudius, and the king falls to his own cowardly doings.…

    Hamlet Introduction

    • 2 Pages

Hamlet is a tragic play by William Shakespeare about a man named Hamlet. The scene is set in Denmark in the 17th century and the king of Denmark has died. Hamlet, the son of the late king, is depressed since the death of his father, and his mother, named Gertrude, has already remarried. The new king, who has married Gertrude after only a few months, is Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle and new step father. Everyone else in the play has moved on from the late King’s death so quickly, but Hamlet is still in mourning. He even contemplates death and killing himself a few times throughout the play. In the beginning, Hamlet is confronted by the ghost of his father telling him that he was murdered by Claudius. The ghost asks Hamlet to get revenge for his death and kill Claudius because the king didn’t have time to repent his sins before he was poisoned. Hamlet is unsure if he can believe that this ghost is his father so he creates a play to see if Claudius really is his father’s murderer. Hamlet acts as though he has gone mad as part of his plan and he eventually he presents a play to Claudius that confirms that Claudius is guilty because he storms out in anger. Claudius and Gertrude are unsure of why Hamlet seems crazy at first, but a man named Polonius thinks it is because Hamlet is in love with his daughter, Ophelia. When Hamlet is trying to carry out his plan of revenge, he accidentally kills Polonius, who is hiding behind a curtain, while he is talking to Gertrude. Ophelia ends up drowning and people suspect that she killed herself because of her madness due to the grief that she felt about the death of her father. Claudius decides to send Hamlet to England because his madness can cause problems in Denmark. However, Hamlet discovers that is a plan against him and he escapes the boat he is on and returns to Denmark. He sends letters before him to warn everyone of his coming and Claudius and Laertes, Ophelia’s brother, make a plan to kill Hamlet in a…

Claudius has no idea Hamlet is there and the prince thinks of this as an advantage to him, this is where he plans to kill the King. Lost in thought, Hamlet decides that if he does kill Claudius he does not want it to be in a confession booth, he says “Now might I do it pat, now he is praying, And now I'll do 't. [He draws his sword.] And so he goes to heaven And so am I revenged. That would be scann'd: A villain kills my father, and for that, I, his sole son, do this same villain send To heaven.”(iii iii 186) Many Hamlet scholars think that Hamlet is scared to kill Claudius and the only reason he even thinks of this is because the ghost of his father tells him too. This decision that Hamlet makes prolongs the death and gives him more time to think, this in the end is not a good decision for the young prince and keeps the play very suspenseful. During the time after this part in the play Hamlet is talking to his mother in her room, he hears a noise and thinks it is the king so without thinking he rushes to the curtain and begins to stab what he thinks is Claudius ese dropping on their conversation. The mysterious noise in the curtain turns out to be Polonius, Hamlet then becomes a murderer and uses this accident to his advantage against the…
