How Does Edith Wharton Use Literary Techniques In Ethan Frome

Ethan Frome, a novel by Edith Wharton is a novel written with simplicity and control. Throughout the novel many techniques are used. Her choice of vocabulary and sentence structure is severe to the outline of her story and the characters in it. Wharton builds up patterns of imagery, behavior and specially powerful words; all in which serves a purpose of her stylistic writing.
In chapter 5, when Mattie quotes “I hope Zeena ain't broken anything she sets store by,” she called after him as he turned the greys toward home.” (Wharton). Mattie shows suspense by giving hints on what's going to happen with the pickle dish. Later on in the chapter, Mattie is distraught because the pickle dishwasher one of Zeena’s prized wedding gifts. In fact Zeena never used it because it symbolized marriage and love. The breaking of the dish symbolized Zeena and Ethan soon to be failed marriage. In contrast to Ethan and Mattie's love for one another. Also with Ethan trying to “fix” the pickle dish by gluing it back together, shows their love affair is not acknowledged but actually hidden.
But if you'll wait around till the old man comes around maybe he can put his hand on it.” This quote showing the suspense of repairing the dish before Zeena gets back from her medical trip so he can fix their “marriage”. The store clerk looking in all corners of the store but can't find any glue symbolizes maybe Ethan should come out and tell about his love for Mattie even if it seems immoral. Ethan shouldn't build up all this guilt for being in love with someone, they can't chose who to fall in love with. Marriage is a process of two people who make their relationship permanent, official and public. But if you don't love that person stop hiding yourself and tell the truth. Don't be scared of making choices that are the best for
