How Does Biotechnology Influence The Future Of Humans
Assess how biotechnology will influence the future of humans

“Biotechnology is the use of living things to make or change products. It is both an ancient art and a modern science with applications across different sectors.” – CSIRO. Biotechnology contains the special chemicals of living cells, from single-celled bacteria and yeasts, to multi-cellular organisms for human purpose. The word ‘biotechnology’ is modern though humans have been using biotechnology to staple foods and beverages for a very long time. It can be used to help cure several different diseases though the same biotechnology can also increase chances of abnormalities to humans. Biotechnology is a huge influence for the future of humans and plays an important role in sustaining human life. The three popular aspects of biotechnology are IVF, Gene Therapy and Cloning and will be covered in relation to the future of us humans.

One example of biotechnology is IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) which is a method where an egg is fertilised by sperm outside the body. This process takes several weeks requiring the removal from the ovum from the ovaries and fertilization of sperms which are transferred into the woman’s uterus. A benefit of using the IVF method is it provides an opportunity of conceiving a child even if you are unable to conceive naturally. Another advantage is …show more content…
Gene therapy is the process through which infected cells are removed, manipulated and then reinserted into the body. Gene therapy is a technique for correcting defective genes that are responsible for disease development. There are several different approaches of correcting the faulty gene. Firstly an abnormal gene could be swapped for a normal gene through the process of homologous recombination. Secondly a normal gene may enter a location within the genome and replace a non-functional gene. Lastly a particular gene is altered when the gene is completely

Biotechnology is improving the world of medicine, agriculture, and energy production. For example, there are two individuals, one who has malaria and the other has built up a resistance to malaria. Knowing that an individual has built up resistance to malaria can help, simply by taking a sample of their blood and uploading it to a computer. Scientists will trying to figure out what is the cause for this resistance to malaria, they will have to break down the DNA of the individual who is immune and simply extract the gene repelling malaria. With this knowledge there will be fewer deaths to groups of individuals who have not genetically build up a resistance to malaria in high risk countries. The downfall to biotechnology in the medical world is finding test subjects that will comply with the testing’s. Once the scientists and doctors find a concrete solution, they will be approved by the FDA to release their material to the general public. In the agricultural world, technology has helped us improve plants to become more stable and be able to sustain life in certain temperatures. With the creation of the microscope, we can see what genes we can take out the plant and add to the plant cell, so it can become a super plant. As we grow, global warming is causing the Earth to become hotter each year. Therefore we are then creating plants that can sustain life with less water than the original.
