When Arnold describes his hometown of Wellpinit, he often makes it sound like Hell on Earth. Arnold’s first descriptions of his home were, “the poor-ass Spokane Indian Reservation,” (p. 7), and “located approximately a million miles north of Important, and two billion miles west of Happy.”(p. 30). Arnold has a disability, and gets bullied by almost everyone on the reservation. His family is in poverty, and his father is a drunk. Arnold has a rough life, which can create a haze of fog making everything seem dull, and horrible.…

However, a considerable amount of time has passed since Creamer wrote her essay on California’s state of affairs. The recent election has woken up Californians, and overwhelming two-thirds of Californians said a solid no to fascism, demagoguery, and bigotry. Immediately after that last votes were tallied, huge protests like the Women's March were organized. Californians have finally begun to stand up for what is right. We have grown up since we put Schwarzenegger in the governor’s office, and I hope this trend continues. Gavin Newsom is running for governor in 2018, the man who brought universal healthcare to San Francisco, an achievement that I hope he can bring to the rest of the state. Bernie Sanders sent a huge message to Wall Street and the one percent who own more wealth than the bottom ninety-nine: a political revolution is brewing. Despite California’s voting record in the past, it seems to me that we have a hopeful future ahead of us, despite the setback we faced last November. Hopefully, we won’t ever recede into the lethargic state of political disengagement that Creamer…

Another of the narrator’s character traits is his intelligence. The superintendent of his high school helps to show the narrators intelligence in this story “he knows more words than a pocket sized dictionary” (285). The narrator doesn’t want to come right out and say he is intelligent, but expresses it in the way his superintendent spoke of him “Gentlemen, you see that I did not overpraise this boy” (286). The narrator says “I delivered an oration in which I showed that humility was the secret, indeed, the very essence of progress. Everyone praised me and I was invited to give the speech at a gathering of the town’s leading white men” (278). He was very well spoken and presented himself as such.…

Response: This story is a really good motivational piece and made me realize that students should take advantage of every opportunity that’s presented in front of them. Rose describes how school wasn’t important he didn’t pay attention and he did just enough to get by. In high school there are students that just do enough to pass the class. They wouldn’t have the mindset of going to college because no one in their family has ever gone beyond high school. Students that do just enough to get by have the mindset that school is “bullshit of course, is everything you – and the others – fear is beyond you: books, essays, tests, academic scrambling, complexity, scientific reasoning philosophical inquiry.” Pg5.…
